REPUTATION HAS ARRIVED, SWIFTIES.
Actually, if you’re a true, real fan you have had the album for a good couple of weeks now, but that is beside the point. The long-anticipated album of TS fans has dropped and is now on Spotify (sigh of relief). I finally started listening to it and haven't stopped. I love this album!! Let’s break it down.
So there are fifteen tracks on the album that cross over multiple aspects of Taylor’s life including her past relationships including Tom and Calvin, her current relationship with Joe, her feuds like the infamous and never-ending one with Kanye, and of course her reputation. I felt like Taylor got a lot of crap for not doing her usual style but if she’s trying to shed her old reputation then she can’t produce the same music. Kiss the old Tay goodbye. As a businesswoman, Taylor understands that you need to evolve with the rest of your industry if you want to make it.
The vibes we get from Reputation are pretty lit. One thing that came to mind was what her musical inspiration came from when I listened to it I felt similar vibes that I got from Lorde’s Melodrama as well as The Weeknd’s Starboy. I got the Lorde vibes from “Delicate”, “Getaway Car”, and “King of My Heart” I couldn’t nail down the exact moment I thought of Lorde but something just hit me it’s not the lyrics but it’s in the instruments like the music itself. The Weeknd vibes I think come from the song “I Did Something Bad” it makes me think of The Weeknd’s “False Alarm”. But of course, I think we all get old Taylor vibes from “New Year’s Day”. She returns back to a sweet simple piano vibe we got back in the day with “Forever and Always” from Fearless.
Overall, I felt like Tay gave me a good range of songs to add to the soundtrack of my life. I am loving the overall I-don’t-care-what-people-think attitude that comes with the entire album, and she sprinkles it a bit in every track. I think my diva playlist would include “I Did Something Bad”, “Look What You Made Me Do”, “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” and “Ready For It”. The broken heart bops would definitely be “Getaway Car” (my personal fave) and “Delicate”-which is not necessarily a sad song. “Gorgeous”, “King of My Heart” and “New Year’s Day” are each love songs for sure but each has a different vibe to it which I love. Reputation’s songs don’t feel interchangeable as each has a different flair of its own thus making it out to be a killer album
Not to mention she has a track with FUTURE and ED SHEERAN which felt like a proper ode to this transition from old to new. Ed being there through the old Taylor, specifically the Red Tour, and then still being here for the new style. Collaborating with Future is always a good idea.
Personally, I can’t wait for the next music videos to drop as Taylor always has had a flair for theatrical music videos. Remember "Out of the Woods", "Wildest Dreams", "Love Story" and "Mine"? Yeah, me too. And I still love 'em! “Look What You Made Me Do” was literally insane with the zombies, the bank robberies, the car crash, the dancers, the diamonds, the snakes and the oh so many old dead Taylor Swifts. I can imagine even the most sentimental of songs like “New Year’s Day” will be amazing.
My most favorite songs include: “Getaway Car”,“This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things”, “Look What You Made Me Do”, “Delicate” and “I Did Something Bad”.
Songs I listened to but probably wouldn’t have purchased individually: “Call It What You Want” and “Dress”. (These are great songs but I love the other ones so much more, note I still listen to these songs)
Well done, Tay.
If you haven’t listened to the album you need to give it a try. And if you listened to it and didn’t like it...give it another listen!
