"Surprise your loved one with the best Valentine's Day gift this year, she'll love it!"
Wrong.
February 14th is not a holiday to me, and I don't understand why people feel the need to glorify it. Why do we choose one day to show love and appreciation to your significant other? Why can't we show that love any other day?
I confronted my boyfriend a few weeks ago, since this will be our first Valentine's Day together, and I told him basically that I do not want to do anything for it. He kept asking me why, as if something cruel happened to me on Valentine's Day and I was scarred for life. I just laughed at him and told him that I loved him, that I love him every day and I want to show him I love him when I feel like, not when there's a set date for it.
Valentine's Day is filled with these high expectations and people have this misconception that they need to go above and beyond and make this crazy, romantic night. False. Surprise your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, whoever you love, surprise them on a random night to show them you love them.
Something that also irritates me about this day is how people dump so much money just for one day. Going out to a fancy dinner, buying a romantic gift, going above and beyond to make sure the night is perfect- most people spend so much money doing all that and I think it's a waste of money. Honestly, I would be content with ordering in and watching movies and having time alone with my boyfriend. I don't want to go out in public and announce to the world that I'm in this relationship that is conforming to the social ideas that Valentine's Day needs to be celebrated.
I don't want to feel forced to show my love to someone on February 14th. Let me show my love on any random day of any random month, because my love is greater than just one day.
So, you can read this article and think I'm cynical about this day because I hate love and sappiness, which honestly I hate when people are all mushy and sappy, but I just think this day has become so commercialized and overrated and I don't want to be a part of a day that people get to make money off of.
I'm going to love my incredibly kind boyfriend every single day, and I'm going to make sure he knows how much I love him every single day, not just on February 14th- and I encourage everyone else to do the same.
