Registering For Class With Nest, As Told By Michael Scott

As everyone should know by now, Montclair State University is phasing out WESS and introducing the new online system Nest. Alum, prospective, and current students can use WESS (Nest) to view finances, classes, grades, and other useful academic information.

Most importantly for us current students, we have to register for our Fall 2016 classes on this new program. In a time of confusion, I turned to my mentor Michael Scott to guide me through this process. So here's a look at how Michael Scott helped me handle registering for the upcoming semester through Nest.

At the beginning, I was very confident in the new program, seeing it as an upgrade from WESS. I was hoping to actually be able to navigate around Nest without being logged out every 10 seconds. Just kidding, at least WESS was easy to follow.

When my parents try to help, only to discover they don't understand it either. At least now I'm not lying when I say I can't show them my grades.

Upon further inspection and logging on to Nest, I realized I did not know what to do. The layout makes no sense and there is not the same information on Nest as there was on WESS.

I tried again to navigate my way through, but to no avail. I've visited Nest several times but understood it zero times.

This has become my new approach to Nest with my upcoming course schedule. As a sophomore, I'm pretending I understand to seem smart in front of my friends, but really, none of us know.

After seeing the "April 13th is Fall Registration" message on the front page of Nest I became more confident, until figuring out that that does not apply to me. Mine is in a week and a half.

And I'm already hearing about classes being closed an about the problems already plaguing the website...

When you have to explain to your parents that you still haven't registered and your younger siblings are around.

Versus when you're talking about your struggles with your friends and peers.

At least the MSU bookstore is there for us to provide school spirited appeal. I know what I'm using mine for! It's all here!

Until your registration time comes up...

...and you realize that all of the classes you need are closed. Or only available on Saturday's at 8 a.m.

But remember, people make schedule changes every day! So aggressively check up on Nest!

Stay open-minded, it will all work itself out. You'll get what you need. (For the most part.)

Remember, you are Beyonce. You will get those late morning classes and those Friday's off. I believe in you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
