In honor of Treat Yo Self day last week, let’s take a breather from life for a moment and remember when it’s time to rest. If you have ever seen the amazing show Parks and Rec, then you know the episode where Donna and Tom invite Ben to go and spend money on clothes, fur goods, and spa treatments. They ditch their responsibilities for a day and instead indulge in some great pleasures. Now if you’re like me and completely afraid to just go and get a spa treatment because you think it’s a waste of money, let’s redefine “treat yo self” day to fit us.
First off, as much as mindless indulgences can be great, there are some really wonderful ways to treat yo self without feeling guilty afterward. For one, go read a book. Take a moment to get out of your head and out of your stressful life and just read. Read your favorite novel and indulge in an adventure that you know will have a happy ending. It’s a safe way to treat and relax your mind.
Don’t just stop there, go ahead and purchase your favorite book to read and re-read as much as you like. Try to better and nurture your mind. Don’t just aim for pointless activities, do something that can have a long-term impact.
In addition to treating your mind, take care of your body. Don't feel compelled to do the kind of exercise that makes you feel like your head is completely throbbing and your stomach hurts. Instead, do the kind that makes you feel good afterward, whether you want to take a nice walk around the park or a bike ride down a vacant road. Wash your face, scrub your feet and feel good about it. You don’t have to spend a fortune at a spa to feel good.
Treat Yo Self Day may be over, but restfulness and relaxation isn’t and who says you can only treat yourself once a year? That is not the case. Doing something active is actually good for your body and your mental health so realize its importance.
Treating yourself also includes rest, which means sleep. We all know how to get a good night's rest, but we never seem to get it. Whenever we actually get to sleep, we rest and restore our bodies to function healthily. So, it doesn’t hurt to take a nap every once in a while to give us rest!
We can do all of these things to treat our mind and our bodies and still feel lacking. We can treat ourselves with luxuries and mindless indulgences, but we need rest for our souls. The treatments we go through to better ourselves do not compare to the rest that Jesus can provide for our souls. He will always sustain us, and we should not just go to Him once a month to fill up ourselves, but instead we must go to Him daily to receive rest for our souls.
So Treat Yo Self today with both physical rest and mental rewards, but most importantly with the rest of Christ.
