Although the overwhelming majority of police officers are following protocol and are truly watching out for our safety, we all have seen the recent headlines. There is a small sliver of the cop population that is corrupt. This corruption leads to the loss of life for innocent victims and tragedy for their family, friends and loved ones. Now there is an app that may help bring justice to these victims and show the truth behind the escalated altercations.
ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union, released an app called Mobile Justice which allows users to record video and sound of a police altercation. The app then saves it to your phone and uploads it to ACLU's server. This can provide the crucial evidence that will cause police officers to be held accountable for their actions. Cops shouldn't be able to get away with firing multiple rounds into the victims chest at point blank range. Something they were never trained to do. Something they know is not acceptable.
The feature that can do the greatest good is the alerts users receive if there is a someone else recording an event near them. This means that more than one person can submit a video. Videos shot at different angles and different distances away from the altercation can help the victim and their family receive the justice they deserve.
ACLU's app is available for both Android and iPhone users. It is only available in 18 states, but the list is growing. The states where it is available include California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. When searching the App Store or the Google Play store, each state has its own app, so make sure you download the correct one based on where you live.
Safety should always be your top priority. If getting close enough to an altercation to record it puts your life in danger, move back to a safe distance. If the police officer reaches for your phone, stop recording. There is no need to worry because as soon as you stop recording, the video file is immediately sent to the ACLU website where it will be handled accordingly.
Holding peaceful protests is only going to go so far. It's only going to do so much good. What needs to happen is for the corrupt cops to be caught in the act so they will never be able to serve again. Not all cops are to be blamed for the recent events we all know so much about. However, we should all feel responsible for recording the interaction between a cop and civilian if there has been aggressive or inappropriate behaviors.
