The 2016 Olympics just completed its first week. The Olympics have two more weeks left. The first week of the Olympics has had a lot of medal opportunities for the athletes. This week consisted of gymnastics, swimming, diving, fencing, beach volleyball, soccer, judo, and so on. The United States grabbed a lot of medals in these events, while others were only competing preliminary rounds. America had a lot of different results. If you watched the Olympics this week, you saw two of the best athletes ever win gold, and you saw some other athletes struggle.

The women's gymnastics team had a very successful week. The United States women's gymnastics team grabbed the team gold along with grabbing the gold and silver in the all around. In the team final, the U.S. finished on top with Russia grabbing the silver for the second Olympics in a row with China receiving the bronze after not medaling in 2012. However, the men's gymnastics team finished fifth in the team final. Sam Mikulak and Chris Brooks competed in the all around but were unable to place. Mikulak finished seventh and Brooks was 19th. Every single U.S. gymnast from the women's team qualified for an event final which will take place next week.

United States swimming also had a very successful week. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
