Some Reassurance: From One Anxious First Year To Another

We're young, our futures are bright, and it's normal to worry regardless.

Just so you know, you don’t know everything.

And that is absolutely Okay.

It doesn’t mean you’re stupid. It means you’re human and you’re learning, and those are both wonderful things. Sure, some people may know more than you do about one thing, but you undoubtedly know more than they do about another. The same goes for all your different talents and skill sets. Do you think you would have been accepted into your college if you could do the same things as everyone else? Of course not! Attaining diversity is one of the key jobs of admissions.

At least, I think it is. I don’t know. I’m in the same boat as you, walking rather blindly into the next four mysterious years of my life. (Then again... who doesn’t walk blindly into the future?)

It's not illegal to feel completely confident one moment and utterly lost in the next. After all, we're still so young. (Do you realize how young we are? We have yet to be on Earth for two whole decades!) Don’t worry about worrying. Don’t be afraid of being afraid. I’m pretty sure we’re all terrified, in varying degrees, of the unknown.

So embrace it!

Embrace your flaws - all the things that set you apart from the rest of society, and even the things that might make you exactly the same. Embrace all of your crazy thoughts that may or may not have been thought about before, because who cares whether they're unprecedented? What matters is that you are thinking them right now.

Embrace your fears, both logical and illogical, because you won’t be able to conquer them until you acknowledge that they exist. Embrace everything about yourself that you’ve been trying and trying and trying to push away. Don’t leave anything locked up or packed hastily away in the hidden corners of your mind. Just let it all out, because there is so much power that comes from acknowledgement.

I know it's easy to succumb to the clutches of impostor syndrome, to yield to that little voice incessantly throwing words like "inadequate" and "incapable" in your direction. And I know everybody else may seem like they have it all figured out; like they've done this a million times before; like they know exactly what they're doing in their classes and their relationships and in their lives in general. But stop to think for a minute -- you probably appear the same way to them.

Even if we’re all secretly aspiring actors, you don’t have to believe the Shakespearean hype. Not all the world’s a stage.

So relax. Take a deep breath and give yourself a chance. You’re okay. In fact, you’re brilliant.

Now go grab your life and run with it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
