Reasons Why I Write For Odyssey

Because it isn't about the "shares."

Reasons Why I Write For Odyssey

I don’t write for “shares” or “likes.” I don’t write for incentives. Those were not even on my mind when I applied to write for Odyssey.

Here are some of my reasons:

Self Confidence

Before Odyssey, I used to get so nervous about anyone reading my articles. Even when publishing articles for the school newspaper, a feeling of panic would arise the moment I submitted it. Publishing an article every week for Odyssey has helped me grow accustomed to people seeing my work. My confidence has grown. Writing for Odyssey helped me cast aside worries and hesitations.

Strengthen My Writing Skills

As a journalism and public relations double major, I do a lot of writing and my professors give a lot of feedback. A couple of my professors kept telling me my writing needs to be less “institutional” and more “conversational.” Writing for journalism and public relations is completely different than the style of writing for standardized tests or college papers. It was frustrating to disregard everything I had been taught about writing. Thankfully, these new styles of writing are not as difficult anymore.

Write About Things That Interest Me

Being given so many restrictions for writing gets old. Having the creative freedom to write however and whatever I want (within reason) is refreshing. Each week I can pursue different interests. I have the option to switch between humor or more serious articles. I frequently experiment with different styles of writing about any subject I choose.

Make A Positive Impact

Whether one person reads my article or 500 people, my hope is to create a positive impact. If my writing can somehow help someone, make someone laugh or offer a new perspective, then the effort gone into writing the article is worth it for me.

Be Part Of An Incredible Team

I have learned so much from the other college students on my team. It is so incredible to be part of a group of such talented writers and thinkers. Reading my peer’s articles and seeing their strengths pushes me to continue striving to strengthen my writing skills.

Odyssey is so much more than getting shares on an article. It has given me the opportunity to learn and grow as a writer and as a human.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
