9 Reasons You Should Go Through Sorority Recruitment

It's the start of May and the school year is winding down. I've almost finished my freshman year of college. I remember this time last year I was OBSESSIVELY researching the college I was going to that fall and wanting to know everything about it. I also remember seeing that recruitment registration was open and being on the fence about whether I wanted to rush or not. I hesitantly signed up for recruitment the night before registration closed and it's one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Meet new people and make new friends

Giphy

Recruitment is a great opportunity to meet new people. Throughout the process you will meet so many amazing women and form great connections. I met a lot of awesome people during my recruitment that I still talk to now. Getting involved in recruitment is a really great way to meet new women outside of the classroom.

A chance to see more of campus

Giphy

You are most likely gonna be doing a whole lot of walking during recruitment. You will get your steps in and get to see more of the campus. Make sure to wear some comfy shoes!

Improve your interview skills

Giphy

Believe it or not, the recruitment process is kind of like a job interview. The chapter wants to get to know you and see if you would fit in well with their sisterhood. They will ask you a lot about yourself, what you did in high school, what your personal values are, etc. They want you to brag about yourself a little bit. Put your best foot forward.

Learn more about yourself

Giphy

Like I said earlier, the different chapters are going to ask you a lot about yourself during recruitment. The first day or so of recruitment is usually a lot of surface level questions such as, "where are you from?", "what's your major?", "what kind of activities were you involved with in high school?", etc. The last day or so will consist of a lot deeper and more personal questions that you may have not thought about before. You might end up learning a few new things about yourself.

Get involved

Giphy

Because you are able to meet new people recruitment can be a great way to get involved on campus. I learned about a few campus organizations that I was unaware of from the sorority women I met who were involved in them. I even ended up joining a few of the organizations.

Cute and catchy chants

Giphy

I'm sure everyone has seen the viral videos of the "terrifying" sorority door chants. But trust me, they are not nearly that intimidating in person. Honestly, a lot of the chants are cute and catchy and they'll leave you with a smile on your face.

Tour the houses

Giphy

One of my favorite parts of recruitment was getting to take a tour of all of the extravagant sorority houses on Greek row. The houses are always gorgeous on the inside and the rooms are always super cute. However, don't rush a certain sorority based solely on how nice their house is.

Bid day!!

Giphy

I'm gonna be totally honest. Bid day was kinda scary as a new member and a little disappointing because I didn't get my top pick (but I LOVE my sorority now. Trust the process always). Bid day is literally just one gigantic party meant to celebrate you finding your new home. Take it all in and enjoy it.

Find your home away from home

Giphy

Like I said earlier I didn't get a bid from my first choice sorority. This is not the end of the world. I cannot stress enough how important it is to fully trust the recruitment process to put you where you belong. I now love my sorority more than anything and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. You should feel comfortable and like you can be yourself in your sorority. Your sorority will ultimately be your home away from home

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
