For those thinking about going out to celebrate Halloween, here's just a few reasons to stay in instead.
Recently, the United States had its two worst days for coronavirus cases. On October 22, the US reported over 77,000 new cases which were then surpassed the following day with a total of over 79,000 new cases.
2. Masks?
The partygoers, the college students, the drinkers will not be wearing masks. How are they going to do their keg stands and drink their trashcans with a mask on? Oh right, they can't. And those who do wear masks, maybe you, will more than likely succumb to peer pressure and remove it, especially if they've been drinking. The best way to ensure your health and safety is to not attend the parties in the first place.
3. No social distancing.
What do people who go out on Halloween do? Gather in masses, absolutely not six feet apart, in bars and houses. And as discussed before, those individuals will likely not be wearing masks. This is a classic recipe for some corona.
4. You can eat more.
If you are home, you do not have to wear your mask and thus can eat all the snacks you want to celebrate surviving another week during a pandemic and working to keep yourself and others safe, not only on Halloween but for the past seven months.
5. You can still dress up and take cute pictures.
A couple of days after Halloween last year my roommate had a "brilliant" idea for a duo costume — Duchess Kate and the Queen. I really let this girl put eye shadow on my face to look like wrinkles. But we took some time to get all dressed up, took a couple of "cute" pictures, and my Instagram followers got a good laugh in.
6. To protect those you live with.
If you don't care enough about your own health and safety, what about your roommates or housemates or parents or siblings? Going out puts everyone's health at risk, not just your own.
7. Quarantine.
If you do get COVID when you go out, you'll have to isolate, which would be absolutely horrible, especially if you live in a dorm. You won't be able to see anyone or go outside for at least a week and will likely be fed terrible food. For those who live in dorms, everyone around you will have to get tested, you'll be sent away, and again, your food will be horrible most likely.
8. The glory of home.
You can eat all the candy you want. You can wear sweats. And you can binge so many great Halloween movies. Personal favorites include the Halloweentown series or Twitches. Last year it would have been totally safe to go out, I still stayed in and watched Madagascar with some kids from my dorm. I give it a 10/10.
All in all, staying in reduces your chances of contracting COVID-19 and contributing to the spread. Another surge could result in more large-scale shelter-in-place orders as well as businesses closing. This will lead to weakened mental health and a weakened economy.
