Christmas is a stressful time of the year. People are often particularly broke around the holidays. It’s not the best surprise. Unless the person has already expressed their desire for a new companion.
They may not be knowledgeable about caring for the animal. They may feel shameful (bad) because they don’t have a fervent desire to care for the animal (maybe unwanted).Children shouldn’t have the impression that animals are toys that can be forgotten (that can be tended to at their convenience)
1. Weather Conditions, Training/Safety
You have to walk them outside and training is involved. They are sometimes being left outside. So it may not be the best idea to gift a pet for the holidays because work is involved in having a pet. The animal also might escape. Very high number of pets escape around the holidays and end up on the streets with no identification. The animal gifted may not be the person’s preference (Breed, size, color, gender, temperament, etcetera).
2. Timing/Schedule
They’re a 10-20-year commitment. They’re expensive to properly care for. They can be destructive (end up outside or at the shelter). They need stimulation. They have feelings, just like you.The receiver may not have space for them (Apartment and they may be rambunctious)
“Animals aren’t for Christmas, they’re for life." They’re a lifelong commitment. Their full life is only a fraction of yours.
