“I used to love reading when I was younger,” is a phrase I hear all the time from people. With the hecticness of everyday life, it can be easy to feel like you never have time to read. However, if you add up the time you spend looking at a screen or travelling, you definitely have time to dedicate to reading. I understand that some people have trouble reading, which is why audiobooks are a great option for those with reading trouble, poor eyesight, or they don’t have time to sit down with a novel. Audiobooks can be enjoyed on your morning commute or while you are making dinner. Either way, you should be reading more for these 5 reasons:
1. Reading novels boosts empathy in people
Reading and learning about different cultures, living situations, and people in general can help you relate to others and cause you to have more empathy. In a world full of corruption and hate, it would be good if we were all a bit more kind and understanding to each other.
2. Reading improves brain function
Studies have found that reading can improve brain connectivity and function. Keeping your mind active and engaged is a key to living a long, healthy life.
3. Reading can improve your writing
While not everyone considers themselves a “writer,” they probably write everyday. From journaling to emails, writing is an everyday occurence, and reading is an easy way to learn new words and improve your own writing. Avoid being like Lisa Simpson and crack open a book!
4. Reading can be therapeutic
Studies have shown that reading can improve mental health! Additionally, with more representation being addressed in novels, it can be relieving to relate with someone similar to you. Kaye Toal discusses how important and influential it can be to see yourself in a book character in this article.
5. You can travel for free!
Reading can transport you to different worlds. If you become immersed in a story, it’s almost as if you’ve gotten to travel from the comforts of your own home.
Reading is extremely beneficial and fun once you find the right book, so take some time out of your day to relax and enjoy a novel. Remind yourself of the days when you got excited about the Scholastic Book Fair or rode your bike to the library.
