As someone who came to Columbus from a suburb, navigating public transit on my own was stressful. I wasn't sure how to get on the bus, I would check my route online even though I didn't understand what I was looking at, and I would have Google Maps open the whole time that I was on the bus. However, understanding public transit is a skill that is valuable no matter where in the world you are.
1. It exists in every city
Every major city has its own form of public transit, whether it be buses or trains. While living in a city doesn't completely prepare you for the public transit in other cities, it at least gives you the base knowledge to figure out how to get around any city.
2. It's quicker than walking
There are places that you can walk to, but they would take so long to get there. Sure, public transportation can be gross, but that doesn't mean that it isn't worth it save time and effort.
3. It's cheaper than Ubering
Sure, Uber is convenient because someone else does all the navigating for you, but during popular hours, it can cost a ton. Riding a bus can save you money, especially when you make frequent trips to similar places.
4. Helps you understand maps and geography
I am terrible with geography, but it's important to be able to look at a map and figure out what direction you need to head to get to where you're trying to go.
5. Gives you more freedom
Having access to public transportation gives you the ability to travel throughout the city and see new sights. Being able to travel and see new sights, even in one's own city, is an opportunity to explore, and you aren't confined to the area where you can walk to.
6. If you have an unlimited pass, you can ride wherever, whenever
At Ohio State, the COTA bus passes are included in tuition, so you can ride as many times per day as you want and can go on any of the buses. The pass is already paid for, and it can be used frequently, so why would you not take advantage of what you already have?
7. Less navigation
Taking a bus or train can put you exactly where you need to be. At the very least, it can get you so much closer, and you might only have to walk a few blocks versus 15 or more. Not only does this take less time, but there are fewer directions to follow.
8. There are directions on your phone
Navigation apps allow you to figure out exactly where you need to go, including walking instructions to the stop, where you need to get on or off, and then walking directions from there. Navigating isn't hard to do, especially when you have all of the directions in front of you.
