First off, don’t get me wrong, I love Augusta, and I love living in a city. While I wouldn’t really consider Augusta a huge city like Atlanta, I love that it has just about everything I could want or need on a daily basis in about a twenty mile radius.
There’s a Kroger less than a mile from my house, a movie theater ten minutes away, and a mall fifteen minutes away, or, if I’m lazy, I have a TV with hundreds of channels on it at my house.
While this is convenient, sometimes, I think it is good for me to get away from the city and go to a place a little less traveled. This weekend, I’m in the mountains for fall break, and I couldn’t be happier that the nearest grocery store is thirty minutes away.
Here are some of the reasons why I love vacationing in a place where the hustle and bustle of Augusta seems very far away!
- Fresh air. There’s nothing like a breath of fresh air. I don’t know whether it’s just me, but the air always seems crisper out in the country. It’s easier to breathe, and it smells a lot better than the air in Augusta.
- Fewer fast food restaurants. With the hustle and bustle of a busy schedule and being in college, I often opt for eating fast food instead of homemade meals at my house. But when I’m away, out of the city, I’d rather cook my own food, because of the limited fast food options and how far they normally are from where I am staying.
- The stars are brighter. Due to lack of city lights, the stars are so much brighter than they are in Augusta. If you’re like me, you love looking at stars at night, and there’s nothing better than lying on a blanket in the middle of the night and looking for constellations and shooting stars!
- Everything turns into an adventure. When I’m able to get away from Augusta and go to either a new place or somewhere I don’t go very often, even trips to the grocery store become an adventure. It makes average things more fun, and who doesn’t love getting lost with no cell phone service? Am I right, or am I right?
- No cell phone service. Why this may not be true of all places, it’s nice not to have cell phone service all the time. When I went to Ecuador for a study abroad trip, not having cell phone service all the time was seriously one of my favorite parts of the trip. It was so relaxing and refreshing to not constantly be on our phones the whole time, and everyone on the trip got to know each other really well because of it!
- The lack of agendas. This is probably my favorite part of being on vacation a little bit out in the country. While some people come with agendas of what they want to do during their stay, my family has never really been too into planning things, so we just sort of go with the flow!
Augusta will always be home, but it is nice to get away for a while. While many people opt to visit big cities like New York and Chicago, I love going somewhere I can relax and enjoy the outdoors, a home-cooked meal, and limited cell phone coverage!
