11 Reasons You Should Dedicate More Time To March Madness
Dan Carlson

The best month of the year for basketball is here, and it’s called March Madness. Hopefully, one of your favorite teams has been chosen to go to the “Big Dance” this year- but if not, you should still tune in and watch how these basketball stars are making history. Since the original March Madness started in 1908, rivalries have not ended and the battle to be the best team in the nation is just beginning.

1. It brings people together.

It’s the talk of the town- you don’t want to miss part of the action. Even if you aren’t caught up or don’t know what’s going on, just ask. It’s a great conversation starter!

2. It gives you a reason to yell your head off.

Not only is this a great way to relieve stress but cheering on your favorite team is necessary- show your school spirit! Don’t worry about standing out either. Trust me; you won’t be the only one screaming.

3. When any of the underdogs advance, it makes things much more interesting.

Choosing who you think will advance to the Final Four from 64 teams selected from across the South, East, West, and Midwest is exciting- just don’t forget about the underdogs. Anything is fair game, and anyone has a fair shot at winning the title.

4. Predicting the perfect bracket is almost impossible, but it's worth a try.

The probability of completing a perfect bracket is like getting a winning lottery ticket. You can hope all you want, but the odds are not in your favor. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is 1 in 259 million and winning the Powerball is 1 in 292 million. Having a perfect March Madness bracket, it's next to impossible. Although there is a debate about whether the actual probability of correctly predicting the winner of the tournament is 1 in 9.2 quintillion or 1 in 128 billion, either way, picking all the winners from each game accurately is incredible, requires skill, and lots of luck.

5. You could win big if your bracket is flawless.

Since 2014, American business magnate and billionaire Warren Buffet has been offering up an astounding $1 million a year for life prize to anyone who can correctly predict the winner of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

6. Even if you don’t like basketball, you still want to know which teams are moving on.

March Madness captures everyone’s attention. Why would you not want to know what the hype is about and who will be this year’s NCAA men’s basketball champions?

7. You get to watch the most talented basketball players of the year perform.

It helps you get a better understanding of the hard work, dedication, and love these players have for the sport.

8.You can unapologetically fix your schedule around every game.

You’ve got to watch it while it happens- it’s history in the making!

9. You never know who’s going to win a game.

The underdogs this year have been victorious and have busted brackets across the nation. Don’t count them out just because they didn’t start off with a higher rank before the tournament began.

10. The basketball games are always so intense and will leave your heart racing.

There are close calls where it could’ve been anyone’s game, or they prolong the suspense and tension go into overtime. I honestly hold my breath after each shot that is made- hoping that it’ll go in the hoop!

11. When your team wins it all, it’s the best feeling.

Not only does your team get a shiny trophy, you also get bragging rights for a whole year. School pride at its finest.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
