If you watch Seinfeld, you know exactly what Festivus is. A nontraditional holiday that Frank Costanza created because he didn't want to celebrate Christmas. Although the idea of Festivus came from a TV show, many people actually celebrate it each year. Here are 7 reasons why you should celebrate it, too!
1. It's on December 23.
If you normally celebrate Christmas, this means you still can since it's 2 days before. Or it means you can spend Christmas Day doing other things, like catching a movie.
2. You can air your grievances.
A big part of Festivus is sitting down with your loved ones and letting them know how they've disappointed you this past year.
3. You don't have to bother with a Christmas tree.
The Festivus tradition calls for an aluminum pole instead, which is much easier than a tree.
4. It's perfect for nonreligious people.
Because a lot of people enjoy the holidays but not the religious aspects.
5. Festivus Dinner
Festivus tradition also calls for loved ones to gather 'round the table and feast. The main course is meat loaf on a bed of lettuce, but you can probably modify it.
6. The Feats of Strength
To end Festivus, the elected head of the household competes with a family member until the head is pinned. Who doesn't like a little family competition during the holidays?
7. You don't have to buy gifts.
The idea behind the creation of Festivus came when Frank Costanza fought with another man while trying to buy his son a Christmas gift. Because of this, gifts aren't a part of Festivus. However, it is acceptable to make donations to The Human Fund instead.
Whatever your usual holiday plans are, give Festivus a try. It's a Festivus for the rest of us!
