Why is it that Thanksgiving Dinners only cause chaos with a family, but a brunch with the same group of people never seems to be as upset at a family brunch? Easy question to answer, honestly. Brunch is superior to all other meals. It's too early for anyone to be hangry when brunch is served, but it also late enough in the day that no one's cranky from just waking up. Brunch isn't only a way to catch up with family members and friends or a great date idea, but it is simply a way of life for some, myself included.
1. Calories don't matter
Just like during the holiday season, calories don't count come brunch hour. Do you want to have four pancakes and a quiche all to yourself? Go for it! No one can say anything because brunch is a safe place where calories aren't counted, and your rude aunt can't make any comments on your eating habits.
2. Mimosas never stop flowing
Mimosas and any other drink you might love never stop being passed around at brunch. Mimosas, sangrias, coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and even just straight wine. No one is gonna complain about a boozy brunch, though it might be part of the reason why your family gets along so much better than other meals.
Plus, it is the only method of day drinking that anyone has that isn't concerning to others. Win-win.
3. Brunch isn't a set time, it's a state of mind
Are you a morning person? Great! Brunch is perfectly acceptable to have at 10 a.m. with your family after church. Did you stay out all night last night? Great, too! Having a hangover brunch in the middle of the afternoon is just as acceptable, if not a little more fun. Are you planning a brunch date with the cutie from your sociology class? Any time of day works!
As long as there are multiple egg dishes, some sweet pastries, and a few types of breakfast meat to be served around, you can have a brunch with whoever, whenever.
4. No matter who you ask, they love it
Maybe this is just my experience, but I've personally never had anyone say no to brunch. It could be the convenient timing of brunch or the variety of food served, but everyone seems to love it. The happy, bubbly atmosphere of a brunch restaurant or the potluck styled brunches at home can leave anyone satisfied after a full, guilt-free meal.
Also, somehow, politics never seems to come up controversially at brunch like they will at the dinner table. It might be the mimosas, but I don't think anyone is complaining about that.
5. The food
It's a given, but I had to say it. The food. Has anyone ever had better food than brunch? Sure, expensive surf and turf dinners are lovely and homemade pizza can be good enough to die peacefully. However, brunch takes the gold medal in great food. There are so many different varieties that anyone can enjoy, from expensive to cheap, from salty to sweet, from small portions to leftovers-for-the-week sized portions. So many options, so many happy people at brunch.
