There was a time in my life where I could watch a football game and enjoy the sport, enjoy a win, and be happy to see a well-played game. I could eat a piece of pizza and (unless it was the Browns) not have to worry about indigestion or choking on a bite while screaming at a player. This football season, though, I decided to join a fantasy football league. Little did I know that, by doing that, I would be kissing my peaceful NFL season goodbye. Here are my top five stressors in regards to fantasy football:
1. Drafting
I’ll be honest, I’m a pretty big football fan, but I usually only start following closely once the season gets underway. In fantasy, though, you have to draft a team early, and for me, before I know anything about what’s expected for the season. For example, this year, I had to draft a team while working as security at a fair, and it was one of the most stressful things I’ve done all year. I set up a kind of automatic queue for players I wanted, but I started to fall behind on picking them ahead of time and had to make split-second decisions when I realized I was on the clock.
2. Inaccurately projected points
I do my research based on players who are projected to have high points; the goal is to win. But nothing is more stressful than a player who’s projected to have 25 points and ends up getting -1.5 Like, come on, y’all, I’m counting on you (and your projected points, let’s go).
3. Monday night games
More than once this season, I’ve gone into Monday night’s game a solid twenty points ahead without any players playing in the Monday game, only to wake up Tuesday to one of my opponent’s players going off and scoring 23 points.
4. Injuries
Injuries are never a good thing in any game, but it hurts a little when one of your players gets benched for a broken finger nail.
5. Having players on opposing teams
When you have players on both teams that are playing each other, it’s impossible to cheer for either team; at the end of the day, you’re just hoping your players do well.
Don’t get me wrong, fantasy is fun, but I’m too competitive to rest easy from kickoff on Thursday until the Monday night game ends. But it’s (slowly) teaching me to accept that I can’t always win, and to get over losses and come back stronger (or at least hopefully stronger) next week.
