Being a part of a sorority has been a ball. Between the girls, formals, the commitment, taco bell runs, the trust, date-nights, and other perks, I’ve loved every second with the crazy girls who’ve become my sisters. When I came to college, I didn’t know anyone. Every person I met was a fresh face and start. I was the only one from my high-school in a couple years going to Hope College. My plan was to get out of my high-school shell and experience new things. Greek Life first came to mind because I thought it would be a great way to meet people. But even with that, I only focused on the fun aspects of being Greek. Once I got my bid, I was ecstatic. Just through the rush process, I began to realize what being in an organization like this really meant. By going through the Greek process, it became so much more than just “fun”. These girls became my family on campus. The best things about being in a sorority have come in the smallest ways and the biggest ways.
1. My closet expanded by sixty.
Between all the girls and all the different personalities, there is an array clothes to choose from for any event. Girls just text in the group-chat for heels this color, an outfit for an interview, or a dress for a date. And girl, someone's got you. Or you can do the swap of shirts for going out, so it looks like you bought a new shirt but you pulled a fast one and saved money. I have gone a couple months without buying anything new. Sharing is caring. And these girls are willing to share anything with me, and I do the same thing for them.
2. I always have a date.
That emoji with the girl raising her hand is us all the way. Who wants to see a movie? ME. Who wants to get froyo? I do. Who wants to go to the bars? For sure. Who wants to get taco bell? Everyone. No matter what plans you want to make, someone will want to go with you. I have gone on so many dinner dates with my sisters. We treat ourselves. It's nice with so many girls with so many interests, because whether I want to go to a play one night and then go to a basketball game the next, I always have a partner. And it’s a great way to experience new things, because you have someone you trust to hold your hand in any new adventure.
3. I can be weird.
I can be the weirdest me, and my sisters actually like it. We all are little freaks running around trying to be adults but we have the best fans while doing it. Girls will wear hot dog costumes and be applauded. Someone will eat twenty dollars worth of McDonalds and she is a hero. My roommate always keeps Oreos on hand. Why? Because it’s awesome. My sisters love being weird and it’s fantastic.
4. Someone is always there to cheer me on.
Our girls are involved in so many different things on and off campus. Girls dance, paint, play sports, are involved in improv groups, attend political protests, take a part in empowering and educating peers, write, and more. When a girl is performing, we are in the front row wearing our colors proud. We hold up signs and cheer for the girls who like to run on a field and kick a ball. Whatever we do, if we need someone to cheer us on, we got it. With a big sign with her name in glitter too.
5. I always have someone to talk to.
They are my family away from home. Whenever I’m stressed and need someone to confide in, I have multiple girls to call. They will sit there and listen as long as I need. We share the good and bad in our lives and we get open arms in return. Everyone cares and offers prayers. They also offer ice-cream, Netflix binges, and cuddle sessions. When I can’t call my mom, I call these girls.
Sororities are definitely great for parties, cute pictures, and getting crazy. But that is not why the girls stay and keep coming back even after they graduate. They come back for the love and support we give each other. We come back for the good and the bad. We come back because our letters mean more than just a pretty shirt. We come back because these girls are our family and offer so much, even after college.
