So, last week I was flipping through the Snap filters on my break at work and found this one that I absolutely fell in love with.
If you go flipping through my saved Snaps, you'll find that I love the way I look with the kinda creepy filters, so this was no surprise to me. But since Halloween was right around the corner, I thought to myself, "Why not recreate that look for Rocky on Halloween?" So this is the story of how I brought a Snapchat filter to life.
I started off by deciding to make things easy on myself and throwing on my costume which consisted of a strappy black bralette from Torrid, white men's T-shirt from Target that I had snipped and ripped into a V-neck then covered in fake blood, and a pair of black leggings. I figured that it would all work a lot easier if I was already in my clothes so I didn't have to try to avoid wiping off my makeup later. I think pulled back my hair with a cloth headband and some metal clips then cleaned my face with a makeup remover wipe to make sure I had a blank canvas so here's where I started:
Before we get started on the whole process, all the eyeshadows I mention will be from this Supernatural palette I got from Hot Topic (that I am super in love with!):
1. Even out the skin
Let's be real, the best part of a Snapchat filter is that it blurs out everything wrong with your skin. So I decided that it was time to for me to work like I do when I'm going full glam. Usually, I would start with my eyes for a glam look but since this is smoky as hell, I decided to start with my foundation. I started by applying my e.l.f Poreless Face Primer with my fingers--cheap and easy is what I'm about fam. I then applied my NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer in shade 04/Beige to any serious redness or zits that I had and used my beauty sponge to blend. I do that first so it'll blend with my foundation well. I then applied Maybelline Fit Me! Matte + Poreless in 125/Nude Beige with my beauty sponge and finished the liquids my using the NYX concealer in 02/Fair under my eyes. I then set my cheeks--because I know they get oily--with e.l.f Perfect Finish HD Powder and baked my under eyes with NYX HD Studio Photogenic Finishing Powder in 01/White.
2. Brows
I then filled in my brows using NYX Eyebrown Powder Pencil in 08/Ash Brown. It's an unnecessary step since they filter doesn't have brows, but I almost always fill in my brows because you can already see what a difference they make on my face. I then moved to keep them in place with NYX Control Freak Eyebrow Gel in 01/Clear.3. Shadow and liner
I started with Urban Decay's Original Eyeshadow Primer Potion and set that with Assbutt from the palette above. I then covered my whole lid in Possession. At this point, I realized I needed to tightline my eyes so I took the kohl pencil liner from the NYX Two Time in shade 01/Jet Black and tightlined my eyes, did my waterline, and ran it under my lower lash line. I then curled my lashes--so that I wouldn't wipe off any liner later--and used my Revlon Colorstay Classic Liquid Eye Pen in 01/Blackest Black to replicate the liner from the filter as best as I could.
Side note, I don't know why my chest suddenly started getting so red and blotchy, it was real weird.
4. Smoke it to hell
Next, I took Demon and a little smudger brush and ran it all along the edges of my liner both under my lower lashes and on my lid.
Another side note, my mouth was weirdly open because I was singing to the music I had playing when then picture took.
5. Highlight and contour
This part, I got a little extra with. When I was in high school, I did a Maleficent look where I contoured my face in purple instead of the usually bronze-y tan color and now it is my favorite thing to do for dark, vampy looks like this. I used Witchy to contour and then Free Will to highlight. I then decided to get a little more extra and used NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder in 04/Snow Rose over Free Will so that in some lights my highlight would look pink.
6. Veins
I call them veins because this look really reminds me of the way the vampires on the Vampire Diaries look when the go all vampy, but one of my friends in Rocky called them cracks so it's whatever you wanna call them. I did them by by using the felt tip liner side of the NYX liner and trying to create the same lines, within reason, as the filter had.
7. Mascara
It really only makes a small difference on camera, but it makes a big difference in real life. I used water resistant Covergirl Clump Crusher in Very Black--one coat on lower lashes and 3 on upper lashes. I really wanted to use falsies but didn't have any, so maybe next time *shrug*
8. Final touches
I used NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner and NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick both in shade 24/Alien for my lips. I super love both of these products and how pigmented they are. I finished it off with e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set setting spray so it would last all night.
And that was it! I then decided to get a little more extra with it--I know you didn't think I could do more, but here it is. I put in the Scarecrow fangs I customized for myself and took some of the fake blood I used to make the shirt and dripped it from the corner of my mouth to make it look like I had just fed.
All in all, this thing took maybe an hour or more, but I'm also pretty quick with makeup so it may take longer if you try it. But I think it turned out really well. My only problem is that Snapchat doesn't understand how faces work so I couldn't get the lines to show up over the thicker parts of my brows because you can just draw on hair--might've worked if I'd used paint?--and making the liner totally straight when I opened my eyes was next to impossible. I got a lot of compliments on it and that made me happy, plus I got to look spoopy for my favorite day of the year, so I can't really complain too much though.
