Ready Class?

Today's lesson is why I picked education as a major.

Some time ago, I was at a bar watching a basketball game by myself. I was just out enjoying the night, when a gentleman approached me.

Previously in the night, I had talked to a group of alumni who were back in town for some drinks. One of the ladies in the group asked me my major, which in my case is majors. I am an Early Childhood and a Special Education major. She then said something like that's great, but never limit yourself to what is on your degree. Not a really new concept to me, but it was encouraging.

Now fast forward to the gentleman. I told him my major after he asked. Then, he asked me what I do to make money. I told him I work UPS; it is my winter break job (I didn't tell him that it was a seasonal job). He replied with, if he was me, he would forget teaching and go for the higher paying job or UPS. He had some drinks in him, and he bought me some, so I didn't want to argue with him. However, I will explain my choice in majors.

I understand there are more lucrative opportunities for me to make a profession. Believe me, I think about it often. But, I didn't pick them for money, clearly. I picked them because I saw them as majors that really make a difference. Summers off never hurt, but that isn't why I picked them. I selected them because every child deserves a proper education, and I want them to see the potential I see in them. Actually, not see it, I want them to meet it or even exceed it. In order to do that, the children need a top-notch education.

I'm not a top-notch teacher, yet, but I'm training to learn how to implement effective teaching strategies so I can be a top-notch teacher. So, I picked on of the best places to learn the craft from.

Remember, I'm well aware I can make money doing something new. But, I want a teacher to do their job right because there is more than just a job at stake. There are many futures at risk. If I want to see the job done right, if I want to make a difference, I'm doing it myself, same as any other teacher out there.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
