"The Hate U Give" has to be one of my favorite books of all time. By Angie Thomas, this book gives you the feel of what the actual world is and how this so-called "diversity" is not even diverse. The book, however, is a fast read. It also can be read multiple times each time with a new perspective of the novel. This novel actually did make me think about diversity in depth and it helped me be more open-minded about my surroundings and know more about the culture. Some people may not like this novel because it's heavily brutally honest.
The characters dive deeper to show us what it was like living in a non-white space and what it was like living in a whole white space. Angie Thomas had written heavily about racism and what the effects of it were. Moreover, she wrote about the outcomes being more violent with each situation that occurred due to racism.
Riots and hate crime were also a major part of the novel that Angie talked about. Angie made the riots and hate crime descriptions so realistic that it made me think deeper on how these people were living in such conditions? The text shows you a huge perspective and also teaches you the value in your words and the effect that those words have.
The reason why I love this novel so much is because of the content but also because it's a way to relate. However with relating knowing that some race always has fewer privileges than us make us be more empathic and creates a new caring attitude toward that race. Racism is a huge problem and it will not end with only one person wanting to.
Diversity also plays a huge role in modern society. This work also teaches us to embrace diversity not to choose and privilege the race that you like. Angie also talks about police and how police play a huge role in society. Lastly, the book talks about death. How many of us have seen the death of someone who we are close with? Or how many of us see the death of multiple people that were close with?
Another major topic in the novel was about riots. How many of us actually experienced a riot? Or been a victim of one? Not many. The text gives a very in detailed content about what the riot looked like, sounded like, and smelled like. It also was explicit to some content. Angie also talks about struggles and how a young girl had to act like different people when going into an all-white school and coming home to her neighborhood.
This book touches on major issues that we are currently still facing to this day. This novel helps spread awareness of those issues and does a really good job of being explicit and descriptive about what is happening in the actual world as of today. Whoever reads this book or has a voice to spread awareness of issues discussed in the book should definitely. Raising awareness and embracing our diversity can help end majority of the problems occurring today.
