When Our Society Is All Over The Place, How Do I Respond?

In a world where girls are told to look, act and feel a certain way, when children in underprivileged communities are being starved of the life they deserve, and when our society as a whole is failing us, what is there to do?

When Our Society Is All Over The Place, How Do I Respond?

Society is amidst some of the most controversial issues our world has ever seen. In the media, we have seen people rallying for anti-vaccination movements, people fighting for immigration reform, and the harsh realization of the seriousness of mental health and suicide. In a world where girls are told to look, act and feel a certain way, when children in underprivileged communities are being starved of the life they deserve, and when our society as a whole is failing us, what is there to do? What is hope? How do today's people keep chugging along the railway called life?

1. Local Charities

If you find yourself passionate about serving the community, charitable work is the perfect place to begin. Food banks, animal shelters, homeless shelters, and church affiliated organizations are short volunteers occasionally. With society rapidly changing and the need for certain goods and services fluctuating, charities rise to the occasion. Not only will helping others make an impact, it may just surprise you how rewarding it feels to give back.

2. Politics

Although politics have always been an extremely sensitive and controversial subject in society, the topic is especially problematic at the moment. People of certain affiliations believe and act upon even the smallest of issues causing the media to explode with good and bad information. Sure, that may not be true most of the time, but what a lot of people think when they hear politics is the bad things that respected party does, or even the good things they have done. If you find yourself wanting to learn more, look into the local or even state affiliation of your political party. Get involved and give yourself a voice.

3. Public Speaking

Too often the media is flooded with one sided news or even fake information that reaches people before the facts do. People love to frequently voice their opinions, so why not vocalize your ideas in hopes to spread awareness or an important message? How can you get into public speaking? No matter what the topic may be or the issue you are fighting for, SPEAK UP! Each person, no matter race, gender identity, religious affiliation, etc., has a voice that deserves to be heard.

4. Educate Yourself and Keep An Open Mind

Sometimes when information in the media is spread, it comes from uneducated sources. There is so much being thrown around, it can be hard to determine what is accurate and inaccurate. To keep your head above water, read many different sources and do your research! Make sure you can formulate your own opinion based on facts, and not a random person's pointless rant on Facebook. You will 100% come across crazy and inaccurate sources, so it is important to keep an open mind when searching for information, no matter what the topic may be.

What can you do to keep yourself one step ahead of society? It is okay if you react differently than someone. Everyone will respond in different ways to the turmoil and public opinions. In the words of Dory, "just keep swimming."

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
