There has been a lot of media attention focused on rape lately. It seems to just keep getting worse and worse. It seems that our justice system is doing everything entirely wrong when it comes to punishing rapists.
And nobody asked, but here is my opinion on it all.
Victim blaming is one of the most repulsive things ever.
It is not the victim’s fault. Ever.
That’s why she or he is the victim. This person was victimized. They were taken advantage of and they were unable to prevent it from happening.
I will never understand why a human being would ever think it is okay to take advantage of another human. It is never okay. There is absolutely no excuse for it. Absolutely no excuse. I do not care if you were drunk. I do not care if you want to argue that the other person wanted it. I do not care about your excuses. The excuses of a rapist are invalid. Rapists are repulsive.
So why do people blame the victim?
A lot of people seem to have this disgusting idea in their minds that women are just begging for men to have sex with them. They blame it on what she was wearing. They claim that she never said no. They say that she just wants attention.
She just wants attention?
No.
What woman in her right mind is going to lie about being raped in order to get some attention?
Some people probably blame the victim because they think it is easier than facing the truth. People want to believe that the woman wore a short dress because she had every intention to have sex that night. They do not want to know that some man took advantage of this woman by scrunching up her dress and pinning her down. They do not want to know that he would have still taken advantage of this woman even if it meant pulling down her sweatpants. They do not want to know how this woman’s life was ruined so this man could get a few minutes of pleasure. It is easier for these people if they just ignore the truth and blame the victim.
Two rape stories have been circulating on Facebook recently. And people are outraged. As they should be.
First, the Brock Turner case. Everyone is familiar with this one.
Brock Turner is a rapist. I do not care about his social status or his skin color or who his daddy is. I want him to pay for the pain he caused that poor woman. I want him to know and understand that he is a rapist. He needs to understand that he does not deserve to be out of prison. He deserves the worst kind of punishment. Rapists are repulsive. Brock Turner is a rapist, yet his victim has to live with more pain than he does. Where is the justice in that?
Secondly, Robin Camp. The stupid, repulsive Canadian judge who blamed the victim.
Who asks a 19-year-old woman why she wouldn’t just “keep her knees together?” Who asks any woman that? Who blames the victim?
Disgusting.
Unacceptable.
Maybe the problem has to do with judgmental white old men who see women as nothing more than objects. Maybe the problem is that these people have no respect for women. I’m honestly not sure why this is something that has happened. How did we ever get to this point?
Brock Turner and Robin Camp are both horrible individuals. No, I do not know them personally. I have just heard enough about the both of them to be able to accurately make that statement.
I do not understand how one person can rape another person and then get away with it.
I do not understand how people can blame the victim.
What is happening in this world?
We need to fix this. Now.
But how?
Instead of blaming the victim, we should focus on stopping the rapists. The American justice system needs to actually punish rapists in a way that makes others realize that rape is not okay. Rape is repulsive. It is disgusting. It is not welcome in this society. It is never welcome.
Stop the excuses. Do not let someone take advantage of another person. Do not let that happen.
Be a decent human.
Do not take advantage of other people in any way.
Why would you want to ruin someone else’s life?
Brock Turner probably thinks his life is ruined after all of this bad publicity, but what about the woman he raped? How many people know her name? How will she recover from this? How does someone move past something like this?
How do you move on when your life has fallen apart?
Could you?
What if this had happened to you?
It could. And your rapist could walk away after only three months in prison, while you are left shattered for the rest of your life.
This tolerance of rape in America needs to stop. The tolerance of rape needs to stop. Rape needs to stop.
It starts with you. Speak up. Let people know that it is not okay. You may not be a victim, but you can be an ally. Let’s stand together against rape. Let your thoughts be heard.
So please post about it. Talk about it. Spread the word.
Let’s be the generation that raises children who understand that rape is the worst kind of crime. The most repulsive thing a person can do.
Remember that someone raised that rapist. Rapists have parents.
And sometimes a rapist’s parent will use his power or his money to try to get rid of the justice in this world.
We cannot let this happen. We cannot let rape happen.
Raise awareness and raise your kids to know better.
Rape is repulsive.
