After last year's star-studded 40th season, the famous comedy show began its 41st season back in October. There have been some hits and there have been some misses- but overall, the show definitely entertains. Here's a list of worst to best episodes so far, as the show begins their winter break.
9. Donald Trump
Yikes. From the second SNL announced the Republican candidate was going to host, the internet starting protesting. Sure, the ratings were high for the episode but that's only because having Trump host was so controversial. The cast members just weren't into the show and all of the sketches fell short, causing it to be probably the worst episode SNL has had in a while.
Notable sketch:
8. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus was chosen as the season opener this year, doing 'double duty' with both hosting and being the musical act (which makes you think, how much work does that take? Probably an insane amount). Cyrus did alright, but surprisingly it was Hilary Clinton who stole the show: Clinton had her cameo in the first sketch of the night. But it was nice to finally get back into the swing of things, seeing our favorite cast members and starting the new season.
Notable sketch:
7. Matthew McConaughey
Probably the only thing you've seen from this episode is the 'Hello' parody that was all over Facebook. It was absolutely hilarious, of course but the rest of the episode was actually just as good. McConaughey hasn't hosted in 14 years and he did a great job. It might not have been the funniest episode, but there were definitely tons of funny moments that reminded you how great live television is.
Notable sketch:
6. Tina Fey & Amy Poehler
When alumni come to host, there's always an excitement of who else will make a cameo and sadly, only two other SNL alumni made surprise appearances. This episode just fell flat. There were times when the sketches were laugh-out-loud hilarious but then the next sketch would maybe make you giggle once. But what is always nice is how easily Fey and Poehler slide back into their original characters, even after all these years. They are very obviously pros.
5. Ryan Gosling
It's episodes like this one that shows anyone could host SNL, even a dramatic actor like Ryan Gosling. He did a fantastic job! But what definitely sold the show was how many times he broke character. He laughed in practically every sketch, which is always hilarious to see. It showed he was having a good time and the rest of the cast really got into it.
Notable sketch:
4. Chris Hemsworth
Not too long ago, Chris Hemsworth hosted SNL for the first time. Now he's back after just under a year since his first episode. He's proven that he is really good at comedy rather than all of his superhero movies or dramatic roles. Not only was he able to make fun of himself, he was also really getting into the sketches and making the audience laugh. Hopefully we get to see more of him soon.
Notable sketch:
3. Amy Schumer
Whenever a comedian hosts SNL, there seems to be some kind of expectation that the show will be the funniest thing ever. Amy Schumer's episode definitely had its misses, but it was mostly full of hits. She blended in well with the cast and the sketches worked well. It seems like 2015 was Schumer's year.
Notable sketch:
2. Elizabeth Banks
This episode focused a lot on reoccurring sketches from 'Black Jeopardy' to 'High School Theater Show' and they definitely brought the laughs. This episode was also the one after Donald Trump's so anything was better than his episode. But Banks proves she is a superstar, after directing Pitch Perfect 2, starring in both movies plus all four Hunger Games and now hosting SNL. She really did a fantastic job.
1. Tracy Morgan
The triumphant return of one of SNL's beloved alumni- Tracy Morgan. Morgan was involved in a bad car accident within the past year and ended up missing the SNL40 special. This episode was incredible from his 30 Rock costars popping in for a visit to recreating some of Morgan's most popular sketches. When SNL alumni host, the show is always special, making for the best episodes.
SNL returns in January!
