One of the best parts about the Super Bowl is the Halftime Show. Although I am more into the game then the Halftime Show, I am very critical on rating the performances. I was not a fan of the shows of Katy Perry, Madonna, Coldplay, or Lady Gaga halftime shows. Despite my critical receptions of the recent halftime shows, I believe there have been some amazing performances in Super Bowl history. With the big game coming up, I rank my ten favorite Super Bowl Halftime Shows. Yes, I know I was not alive for all of these or too young to stay up for the game. But I have loved the performances on YouTube.
Honorable Mention: Super Bowl XLIV- The Who
This is a band with many classic hits. They did not disappoint in Miami in 2010.
10. Super Bowl XL- The Rolling Stones
I've always liked the sound to this legendary band. It was all fitting with this Super Bowl being held in MoTown (Detroit) for such a band to perform.
9. Super Bowl XLVII- Beyonce
The choreography was incredible in this show. At first I blamed the amount of lights used in this show to be the cause for the power outage that subsequently followed in the second half, but now I blame it on Roger Goodell. I do believe conspiracy theories that it was Goodell who intentionally shut off the power to get the game back into good ratings.
8. Super Bowl XLV- The Black Eyed Peas
The Black Eyed Peas were my favorite band in 6th grade. I was in 7th grade when this show occured, and had developed interest in many other bands. Even though the Black Eyed Peas were declining on my popularity, I still found this to be an incredible show that I wish I could've been able to see live.
7. Super Bowl XLI- Prince
Unfortunately, I remember this Super Bowl as the one my Bears lost. Even if I never see the Bears make another Super Bowl in my lifetime (which I question if I ever will), at least they had an unforgettable halftime show in what was one of the most forgettable and mostly uneventful Super Bowls in history.
6. Super Bowl XXXIX- Paul McCartney & Wings
I have been listening to The Beatles since I was three or four. Of all of the four Beatles, I like Paul's singing the best. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that I really enjoyed this performance. The performance of Hey Jude is what stands out the most to me in this performance.
5. Super Bowl XXVII- Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is another legendary artist that I have enjoyed listening to for a very long time. This was an unforgettable performance with the performance of Heal The World and the children who got involved with the act. However, I was not a fan of him just standing around for a few minutes before performing. Had Jackson got into performing right away, this would've been ranked higher.
4. Super Bowl XLVIII- Bruno Mars & Red Hot Chili Peppers
This is the only Super Bowl that I remember the Halftime Show more than the actual game. Super Bowl XLVIII was such an awful game, and in my opinion, the worst Super Bowl ever. The game featured one of the greatest historical offenses in the Denver Broncos, facing against one of the best defenses of my generation in the Seattle Seahawks, and it was supposed to be a game for the ages coming down to the final minutes. But things crumbled from the get-go. If it wasn't for the incredible talent of Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, I would've felt like I just wasted three hours of my life watching meaningless television.
3. Super Bowl XXXV- Aerosmith, N Sync, Chris Rock, Nelly, and Ben Stiller
This is a Super Bowl Halftime Show that I listen to on YouTube while studying because I loved this performance that much. Well, I was only two when this happened so I obviously didn't see it live. But the first time I watched this one on YouTube, I fell in love with the sound Aerosmith and N Sync produced that night. I credit Disney World for making me an Aerosmith fan.
2. Super Bowl XLII- Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
Prior to this performance, I had never even heard of Tom Petty. Boy, I would never forget about him after this performance. I instantly fell in love with Tom Petty's music that I downloaded some of his albums onto my very first iPod shortly after this performance. I was devastated upon learning about his death this past October because I have enjoyed his music to a great extent. The start of my love for Tom Petty began a few months before I turned ten with this unforgettable Super Bowl XLII performance. Unlike the Bruno Mars performance, I remember this particular Super Bowl for being one of the greatest and most thrilling games in NFL history.
1. Super Bowl XXXVI- U2
While I am a bigger fan of Aersomith, Tom Petty, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney, I simply had to put this one at number one for the touching messages in this show. Since this was the first Super Bowl after 9/11, emotions were very high. And U2's job for paying tribute to those victims killed in the horrific attacks is second to none.
