The MLB post-season game between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees wasn't just a win for Astro fans, but for women in sports as well.
Jessica Mendoza, Olympic softball gold medalist, became the first woman to be an analyst for Major League Baseball on October 6. Unfortunately, even in today's society, there are individuals who were angered and annoyed that a woman reported on a men's sporting event.
One such person was Atlanta radio host Mike Bell. Bell decided to throw in his mature and well-crafted opinion by tweeting:
That's not all though. Bell also got in arguments on Twitter with a few people and proceeded to tweet more hurtful, sexist things about Mendoza.
"Really? A women's softball slugger as guest analyst on MLB Wildcard Game? Once again ESPN too frigging cute for their own good," was one of many more female bashing tweets made by Bell.
Bell apologized on Twitter, but if you search for him, his profile is gone. Luckily, news site such as bleacherreport.com and thebiglead.com were able to capture the tweets.
Bell has also been suspended from his radio station until October 12, and read an apology statement on 92.9 The Game, according to Rodney Ho of Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Mendoza appeared on Good Morning America on October 8, to talk about the incident. She said she accepts Bell's apology, and in fact, didn't even read his tweets because she knew it did not deserve her attention.
"Yes, I am a female, but I want it to get to the point where, let's think about what I am saying, what I am doing, and not so much the sex that I am," Mendoza said in her interview with Good Morning America, "I want to get to a point when we hear a female voice on NBA, NFL, or just anything in men's sports, and it is like, 'Sweet. She's doing a good job.' "
Now that Mendoza has become the first woman to be an analyst for a MLB post-season game, there will undoubtedly be more women to follow in the world of sports broadcasting; despite sexist critics who think otherwise.
