Nearly twenty years later, women are just now stepping forward with their abuse allegations against R&B artist R. Kelly through social media, and the newest three-night, six-part Lifetime docuseries entitled, "Surviving R.Kelly". This docu-series takes a look at the disturbing allegations made against the 51-year-old singer through interviews from former collaborators to 'alleged' victims. According to Complex, the series' executive producer told them that these interviews are "women who lived in his house and studio for years and have the same story about being forbidden to talk...So once those women become free of those barriers, they're looking to connect with each other, to know that they weren't the only ones."

In 2002, Kelly was actually charged with 21 counts of child pornography possession and eventually was acquitted of all charges in 2008. He denies doing anything harmful or anything that was deemed 'wrongdoing', but I call a huge amount of bullshit on that. With all the stories surfacing, it's kind of hard for Kelly to try and deny that he wasn't in the wrong.
Most allegations began when he was 27 and married to 15-year-old singer Aaliyah, which quickly became annulled once her parents heard about it. Which doesn't surprise me! If I was 15 and married to a TWENTY-SEVEN-year-old? My parents would have my throat. Witnesses in the documentary mention about they saw Kelly's inappropriate behavior towards Aaliyah first hand, and explain that in the documentary.
John Legend even commented in the docuseries and expressed his feelings on Twitter, saying, "To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all. I believe these women and don't give a f*** about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision"

Reactions from viewers varied from disgust, disbelief, outrage, but others applauded the series director for putting some light on a story that often is going untouched. People on Twitter are saying how they feel that these women are just now coming forward to put these allegations on R.Kelly simply for their ten minutes of fame and the attention which kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Women are just now stepping forward as they were afraid to speak up. From the stories of the victims, Rob was a very manipulative, evil, nasty man who seemed like he could hurt a woman easily with no problem and no regrets behind it. For more than two decades, R.Kelly has been faced with allegations and thanks to social media, the allegations are starting to become more prevalent to people so they are able to get their stories heard and not be left sitting in the dust.
As I scrolled through social media today, I stumbled upon a thread of a book written by someone who will remain anonymous and her five-year experience with Kelly starting at age 16. All the lies, the abuse, the harassment, mind control, it is a very graphic and detailed read, so if you're a little squeamish when it comes to reading things such as sexual acts, I would advise probably not to read it.
More people reacted and were unable to finish the entire excerpt because they were so disgusted with the acts performed. Some read it and couldn't even put together a sentence to describe what they had just read. I read through the entire thing and it was honestly hard to get through. The things this brave woman told the audience shocked me. You never really see how things truly are until someone who has experienced the actual thing tells their story. It was a very graphic read, but I feel that the anonymous author had to do that in order to get her story across so people can really see that R.Kelly isn't bringing the remix to ignition.
I feel like 2018 and now going into 2019, people have been more open to sharing their stories with situations like this. Examples being Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Piven, Oliver Stone, Casey Affleck, Brett Kavanaugh, and the list goes on. Women and men have faced their fears and challenges and stood up to their perpetrators and defended themselves when it came to discussing their stories. I stated earlier that there was an overwhelming amount of people who stated that these people are doing this just to defame someone, make the perpetrators look like horrible people, and then they can shine high and mighty as some hero for being so brave and telling their story that could potentially be a lie.
Thank you Lifetime, for allowing these brave women of color to finally have their story heard and not be turned away for speaking 'nonsense'. What they went through is real, and pains them every day to live with. Now that they are able to have their story out there, it'll help them start a process of healing.
