2018. A new year and a fresh beginning. It's time to let go of things that have plagued you in the past and forget things that genuinely don't matter anymore. Here are some quotes to remind us how effective change and new beginnings are.

1. "The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday."—Anonymous

It's hard trying to live comparing yourself to others. The best way to guarantee happiness is to realize the only competition you have is your past self.

2. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."—Eleanor Roosevelt

These are very important words to live by. Happiness is a choice you must make every single day.

3. “Just remember: The people that say, ‘your dreams are impossible’ have already quit on theirs.” —Grant Cardone

The dream you gave up on? Try again.

4. "It's OK to not be OK, as long as you don't stay that way."—Anonymous

It's completely acceptable to break down but only if you are going to stand up afterward.

5. "The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't always spoil the good things and make them unimportant."—The Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who

The Eleventh Doctor always had something wise to say and this quote got me through many difficult days because it represents hope and how nothing is permanent, not the good or the bad.

6. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."—Aristotle

Make 2018 a productive year by making good habits and losing bad ones.

7. “Don’t let yesterday take too much of today.” —Will Rogers

Beginnings are all about leaving the past behind.

8.“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” – Lao Tzu

The best and most effective change is to change things about yourself that you aren't proud of.

9. “All of us every single year, we're a different person. I don't think we're the same person all our lives.” – Steven Spielberg

This quote always reminds me that we are all complex individuals and we are allowed to change.

10. "Your desire to change must be greater than your desire to stay the same." — Anonymous

When it gets too hard to break that bad habit, this is a quote that will help.

11. “Loneliness is a sign you are in desperate need of yourself.” ―Rupi Kaur

Make 2018 the year when you practice putting yourself first.

12. “Some people are magic, and others are just the illusion of it.” ― Beau Taplin

Leave all the toxic people and relationships behind in 2017.

13. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” –Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone

We must never be afraid to stand up for what we believe in, even if we have to change relationships in the process.

14. “Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both influencing injury, and remedying it.” –Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows

This is a reminder of how what you say and what you do does matter. Use your magic wisely.

15."Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it's nonsense."— Lemony Snicket, The Slippery Slope

It's hard to listen to another person's opinion when you think you are correct. Stop, breathe, and try to think about it in their perspective.

16. “If we wait until we're ready, we'll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”― Lemony Snicket, The Ersatz Elevator

Get up and do what you are scared of doing. You might regret it later, but at least you will know what happened because you did attempt it.

17. "When you're a kid, they tell you it's all... grow up, get a job, get married, get a house, have a kid, and that's it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It's so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better." —Elton Pope, Doctor Who

This one always reminds me of how we get caught up in the day to day routine and it's easy to forget that there is more to life than this, but as Elton says, there is.

And the last one, to remember how important it is to let go of things that aren't important anymore for this new year:

18. “I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world!”—Dead Poets Society

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
