Looking Back At My Questionable Halloween Costume Choices

I killed Halloween costumes. Pun totally intended.

I miss Halloween when I was younger and getting all dressed up to beg strangers for candy. What I miss most is picking out my costume for the year, which, for an indecisive person such as myself, was always a big ordeal. I was looking through old pictures from Halloween's past, and decided to analyze some of my past decisions and costume choices for your reading and viewing pleasure.

Halloween 2003

At four years old I was dressed as a fairy princess angel thing because I was adorable and could totally pull it off flawlessly. My little brother Nick was the devil, obviously, because I am Heaven-sent and he is an evil little baby (just kidding, I love you, Nick!).

Halloween 2004

At 5 years old, I modeled this cute purple witch costume. The hat really seals the deal, and I think I still own it somewhere. My bangs are stronger than ever and my brother is a very well behaved little dog sidekick.

Halloween 2005

Stupid Halloween 2005, where I was so very excited to dress up as my favorite fairy from the cartoon "Winx Club". I was Bloom here, the blue fairy who probably had super powers, but I don't remember what they were. I loved my costume, but sadly in the dark of the night adults passing out candy mistook me for Tinkerbell. I corrected them at first, but then like a kid with a difficult name to pronounce decided to let it go. It's not worth it, just give me candy and I'll move on.

Halloween 2006

Witch 2.0: More sass than ever before. New hat, more sparkles, look at those pink shoes! My hair was long and shiny and my hat was tall and pointy. Living my best life right here.

Halloween 2007

You'll never believe this: I wore my cheerleading costume this Halloween because I was...a cheerleader! Saving money, I guess? Why didn't I at least put on some creepy makeup? Oh well, I guess it was cute?

Halloween 2008

This was the year that my entire family went as vampires. Clearly I am very, very scary.

Halloween 2009

Before you say anything, this beautiful costume does have a great backstory. When I was 10, I wanted to be a dead rockstar for Halloween. Super easy costume, right? Foam mircophone and sassy skirt, check! Shirt with a guitar on it because that's apparently what rockstars wear? Check! Green hair spray, check? I would like to thank my mother for this terrifying makeup job too. I have no idea what is going on here or why I am smiling like that. My dead rockstar's name was "Deady Labloodo" which, if you're cultured at all, you'll recognize sounds a lot like "Demi Lovato". Get it? 5th graders can be so clever.

Halloween 2010

Oh dear. In attempt to save some money in 2010, I got my "Alice in Wonderland" dress at Salvation Army. I'm pretty sure it was someone's old prom dress from the 90s. Along with this throwback dress, I'm sporting a wig that I could from a birthday party in first grade where I was makeovered to look like Sharpay from "High School Musical" (hence the curly blonde hair). In addition, because it's like 40 degrees in October in Michigan, I had to wear a shirt underneath the prom dress, but I didn't own a plain white one, so we took one of my Christmas penguin shirts and turned it inside out. I was already embarassed enough by my scrappy version of Alice, to make matters worse, at the school parade another girl showed up in the perfect store bought Alice costume. You'll realize every year from this point on I decided to by my costume, this is why.

Halloween 2011

I like to think that I decided to be Tinker Bell this year because of what happened in Halloween 2005. Everyone thought I was Tinker Bell already so I turned the tables and became her! Also, I'm definitely wearing another penguin shirt inside out underneath that costume.

Halloween 2012

Entering the last year of middle school, I went for a quirky, cute look as Minnie Mouse. The braces and awkward hair part scream "gross tweenager", but the costume is not so bad in itself. Also, all of my brothers are terrifying.

Halloween 2013

I'm definitely still obsessed with "Grease" and while if I could play anyone I would want to be Sandy, in 2013 I was Frenchy. I think I did a pretty good job rocking my faux Pink Ladies jacket.

Halloween 2014

I'm Hermione Granger, witches! It was a family affair too! Dressing up was so much fun this year, but Halloween itself was really cold and rainy and I didn't trick-or-treat, but just walked around the block with my family. Costumes: 1. Trick-or-treating: 0.

Halloween 2015

My proudest Halloween costume moment was when I decided to dress up as Rachel from "Friends". This costume, like Alice, cost me zero dollars, but was so much cuter. "Friends" has always been my favorite show, and this year was no exception. No trick-or-treating took place, but I did rock the costume party my family and I went to, even next to my brother as Marty McFly.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
