A few days ago, Qandeel Baloch, a Pakistani model, was killed by her brother. According to her brother, he killed her because she was bringing "dishonor" to their family. Her brother also said that, "Girls were born to stay at home." She was a feminist and an activist. She did what she felt like.
In Pakistan, it is wrong for a girl to be a model, but it is ok for a guy to kill someone? What's wrong with a girl doing what she desires? If her brother feels good about killing his own sister, then he is a sick man who deserves to be punished severely. Also, it is disgusting to see some people laughing at her death, thinking that she deserved this because she was a woman.
We live in a society where women are being mistreated, where women are not allowed to speak their mind, but live scared in a room. Where women can't work certain jobs, and are only allowed to stay at home and cook. Where women can't wear sleeveless tops or shorts, but have to cover themselves completely. Where some men think that women are objects, and they can rape and kill them. These things need to change. For how long we are going to stay scared?
Her murder made me realize that we need feminism more than ever now. There have been a lot of arguments about feminism, as many people think that feminism is about hating men. Maybe after this case, people will think that it's not. Feminism means gender equality. Both men and women are human beings, and I believe that we are quite equal. We all have eyes, a mouth, a nose, hands, legs etc. We talk, eat, sleep etc. Then why differentiate?
Also, feminism gives women an opportunity to make their own decisions. It gives us an opportunity to experience life. Along with that, feminism brings love and care. Instead of men finding faults with women, men and women have the opportunity to get to know each other, and that would make them realize that they aren't really different. Why live in a world with hate, when can we live in a world full of love and acceptance?
Women don't need feminism to look sexy, or to put down men. Women don't need special rights, we don't want to be treated special. We just want equal rights, as we believe that both men and women are equal, and aren't really that different. The world needs feminism for kindness and care. I am still waiting for the day when the world sees that women are strong and capable, the day where men and women are treated equally, where men learn to respect women. I also hope that one day, the world can be peaceful, with people learning to be loving and kind.
I believe in feminism as I believe in love and kindness!
And as for Qandeel, you were very different from other girls. You were bold and endearing. This world doesn't see this yet. You are in a better place now. May you rest in peace.
