Q&A: NBA Off-Season

As NBA Free Agency nears, I decided to ask people on social media if they had any questions about it. I asked people to send me questions to my Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and even text me, if they have my number. My questions got sent to me mostly by Facebook and by text. I chose 12 questions out of the many that were submitted to me and from a total of six people. I would like to thank all of the people that submitted questions to me. I'm sorry I couldn't answer all of the amazing questions, but I hope that these give you what you were looking for. I will answer them to the best to my ability, so without further adieu, here are you questions on the NBA Off-Season answered.

The first two questions are from Ty Zelinsky. He is a friend of mine that also attends Cazenovia College. He is great at fantasy sports but sucks at Madden and 2k. He was the first person to send me questions for this article and I appreciate him doing that. His first question involves the 76ers, who are currently in a rebuild drafting and trying to get assets to make them a competitive team again. His second question involves the Phoenix Suns, who have the opposite problem as the 76ers with a crowded frontcourt.

The 76ers currently have Ben Simmons, Nerlens Noel, Jahlil Okafor, Dario Saric, and Joel Embiid, which I believe is one of the best young frontcourts in the NBA. The 76ers probably aren't going to keep all of these guys, what should they do with this talented frontcourt?

The 76ers are in a rebuild the last couple of drafts they have selected power forwards and centers. Dario Sari is a power forward the 76ers traded for who played overseas for the last couple of seasons and Joel Embiid is finally healthy, all this is making their backcourt even more crowded. I believe that their frontcourt is really crowded too, but their front court really needs help. The 76ers were looking to trade Nerlens Noel or Jahlil Okafor during the draft and I think that it is a great idea. I suggest trading one of these guys because they don't play well together. The 76ers should trade away Jahlil Okafor because there is a strong support in the 76ers organization for Nerlens Noel and he provides the 76ers the defense and rebounding the other bigs can't. The Phoenix Suns are looking to trade away Eric Bledsoe or Brandon Knight this offseason and they would be great players to pick up for the 76ers. The 76ers should make a trade package involving Okafor and some draft picks to get either Bledsoe or Knight. The up and coming Timberwolves are trying to trade their point guard Ricky Rubio and the 76ers could use a point guard so a Rubio and Okafor trade could work.

The Phoenix Suns have a lot of good players in their backcourt like Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight, Archie Goodwin, Devin Booker, and newly drafted guard Tyler Ulis. What can they do to balance this great backcourt?

Those five guards all played for Kentucky during their college career (I guess the Suns love Kentucky guards). The Suns have said they are looking to trade away Eric Bledsoe or Brandon Knight. They had talks with the 76ers about a potential Jahlil Okafor for Brandon Knight trade. They should probably call back the 76ers about that trade. The Suns basically need to upgrade their frontcourt. The Milwaukee Bucks are looking to trade away Greg Monroe maybe the Suns can trade Eric Bledsoe or Brandon Knight because the Bucks need to upgrade their backcourt. Also, The Bulls need a point guard after trading away Derrick Rose. They are shopping away Taj Gibson, so a Gibson for Bledsoe trade could work for both teams. Gibson is a good power forward, but didn't get the opportunity to show it in Chicago. A fresh start is what Gibson needs and Phoenix would be a great place to start.

The next question is from Elijah Dones, or as many people know him as the NBA 2k MyCareer guy, Frequency Vibrations. I met this guy last year and I noticed that he looked familiar, but I couldn't figure out who he reminded me of. So still thinking about it, I decided to play some 2k and when I started MyCareer, it hit me he was the actor that played Freq! My boy is getting those 2k checks! I forgot to ask him if Spike Lee was nice in person, but next time I see him I will be sure to ask. Elijah's question was about the Milwaukee Bucks.

How do you think the Milwaukee Bucks will do next season?

During the draft, they shocked a lot of people by drafting one of the draft's biggest question marks. Thon Maker. Thon was basically a player that came straight out of high school. There were also questions about his age; even though he said he was 19, some people believed that he was older. The Milwaukee Bucks took a huge risk in taking Thon because he needs to work on his game a lot and his only competition has been high schoolers so far. He will need a lot of time to adjust to the NBA. Also the Bucks are looking to trade big man Greg Monroe. He signed with the Bucks last off-season, but looked like he didn't fit in with the Bucks. They can possibly trade Monroe for a better center, maybe bring back Andrew Bogut because the Warriors are thinking about trading him with the current state of his health. They can also trade Monroe for a guard, like Eric Bledsoe or Brandon Knight. The Bucks also plan to put Giannis Antetokounmpo (spelled that without looking it up) at the point guard position this season. People are calling Giannis Magic Johnson 2.0. The man is 6'11" and can literally play any position. I'm excited to see what Giannis can do. If the Bucks have a good off-season, I see them being a low seed playoff team like the sixth, seventh, or eighth seed in the east or barely missing the playoffs.

The next four questions are from a guy that I went to high school with and consider a good friend, Zach Ellis. He is a huge sports fan, just like me...but he is a Yankees and Steelers fan (just threw up). Whenever me and Zach talk about sports, we always have heated arguments, but all in good fun. Whenever he has a question about the NBA, he always goes to me and he sees my NBA updates on his timeline, as should you guys (plug check!). When he heard I was answering questions for the NBA off-season, I had to limit him to only four! His questions will be about Jeremy Lin, the Chicago Bulls, Kevin Durant, and D'Angelo Russell.

Where are some potential landing spots for Jeremy Lin?

Jeremy Lin has played six seasons in the NBA, but he has also played for five different teams. He has played for the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Charlotte Hornets. Lin says the next team he signs with he wants to be home because he is tired of going to new teams. Jeremy Lin was open to a return to the Knicks, but the Derrick Rose trade might have prevented that. He could also re-sign with the Charlotte Hornets which he had a good season for them. He averaged 11.7 points per game for the Hornets while shooting 41.2% for the season. He could also return to the Rockets who need a point guard. He averaged 13.4 points per game one year and then the next year average 12.5 points per game. He can also sign with some teams that need a point guard like the 76ers, Mavericks, and the Nets. He can also try to come off the bench as Chris Paul's backup for the Clippers. If he wants to win, I suggest he go to the Clippers even though he will be a backup. If he wants to start, he should go to the Mavericks.

Who will Chicago's new point guard be and how will the Derrick Rose trade effect Jimmy Butler?

The current point guards they have on the roster are Jose Calderon, E'Twaun Moore, Aaron Brooks, and Spencer Dinwiddie. They need to upgrade their point guard position. They have talked about getting Brandon Jennings. They can also trade for Ricky Rubio or Eric Bledsoe since they are on the trading block. Now, on to Jimmy Butler. Jimmy Butler averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game with Derrick Rose last season. Without Derrick Rose, Jimmy averaged 27.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game. Just from looking at the stats, Jimmy Butler is a better player without Derrick Rose. Will he put up the same numbers he did next season? Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah are most likely leaving Chicago. Taj Gibson is probably getting traded. This means if Jimmy Butler is on the Bulls when the season starts, that they are in a full rebuild. Jimmy Butler will be an all-star caliber player on a rebuilding team. I see Jimmy Butler having a slight dip in his stats without Derrick Rose. I see him averaging around 20-25 points per game and his rebounds and assists per game go down by about two or three. He will definitely be an all-star next season, but I don't see him making the playoffs with the current Bulls roster.

What are the best destinations for KD?

THE BOSTON CELTICS!! Just kidding. I do believe that the Celtics are the best destination because I am a Celtics fan, but let's look at the other teams, I guess. The Golden State Warriors are the best team that are on the list of teams that Kevin Durant will visit. KD on the Warriors will be almost an automatic championship for the Warriors. The Thunder are the next best team on this list. They were one win away from going to the NBA finals, but they couldn't close out the series. Kevin Durant already has established chemistry with the Thunder and him Russell Westbrook are one of the best duos in the NBA. The Spurs are the spurs. The Spurs are a great team but age is starting to become a question. He should go to Boston! Check out my article about it to find reasons why KD should go to Boston (another plug check!)

What should the Lakers do with D'Angelo Russell?

Before I say what the Lakers should do with D'Angelo, I just wanted to say something about the whole "snitch" situation. Is D'Angelo the bad guy here? Nick Young was the one that cheated, not D'Angelo. Some say that Russell broke the "bro code." If Russell didn't do what he did, Nick Young would have continually cheated on Iggy without her knowing. Nick Young is the bad guy here, not D'Angelo; cut him some slack. I know that there is a teammate code and bond, but cheating is not right, especially if you are married. Sorry about the mini rant, back to what the Lakers should do with D'Angelo. They should keep him after they did use their number two overall pick to draft him. He is going to be a good point guard and the Lakers need him. Brandon Ingram and D'Angelo Russell are the future of the Lakers and should not be going anywhere. If they do end up trading D'Angelo, they should do trade him for Jahlil Okafor considering he will be a huge upgrade from Roy Hibbert.

The next question is from a very good friend of mine, Akeem Nyjel Wright, who is Klay Thompson's number one fan. He is also a huge sports fan. He is a fan of the Cowboys (just threw up again), Braves (eh), and the Clippers and Hawks (insert confused Nick Young face). In all seriousness, he is the first resident adviser (RA) I had when I went to college and I'm glad he was he helped me get adjusted. I can't thank him enough for that. Akeem, if you are reading this thank you. His question is about Steph Curry not playing for team USA in the Olympics.

Why is Stephen Curry not playing for Team USA in the Olympics?

Some say that Stephen Curry is not playing because he wants to be 100% for the season. Some say that he is mad about losing the finals after having a 3-1 lead. What do I think? I think it is a combination of both. Curry has a history full of leg and foot injuries which caused him to miss some games in the playoffs last season. Also, I would be mad if I was up 3-1 in the NBA finals and ended up losing. I also wouldn't want to hear about basketball for a good week or so. There were a lot of players that withdrew from playing, but Team USA will still win gold.

The next two questions are from Marc Leo, AKA the world's best middle school teacher. Was that a little bit biased? Yes. Is it still true? Absolutely! Mr. Leo was my middle school math teacher and he will always be my favorite teacher. Whenever I had his class, all we would do is learn about math, of course, and joke about our favorite baseball teams. I would make fun of his Yankees and he would make fun of my Red Sox. It was a very heated rivalry! One time, I was wearing a green Red Sox hat and he threw it out the window, but he got it and gave it back to me when class was over. One time, we had a quiz for class and the bonus question was "who is the best team in the AL East?" I had a major decision to make: get bonus points or be loyal to my team? Obviously I chose to write down the Red Sox. I still got the answer wrong! I don't know why it was wrong. Mr. Leo was so impressed with my team loyalty he brought it up during a parent-teacher conference. Sorry, I was going down memory lane. His questions are about how Phil Jackson is doing and will Team USA win the gold again.

Do you think Phil Jackson's tenure with the Knicks will be successful?

Phil Jackson said the Knicks will be a 3-5 year project. I honestly think that Phil Jackson is doing a good job so far. He got the Knicks a decent point guard. He chose to draft Porzingis even though everyone hated the pick during the draft but Kristaps proved everyone wrong and proved Phil right. In the Derrick Rose trade, he get rid of an overpriced center, an overrated point guard, and a regular rookie. This trade also helped free up some cap space to help sign players. The Knicks are about to sign Joakim Noah, who can be a reliable center for them. I believe that the Knicks will have a decent off-season and they will pick up some decent players, but I don't see them signing Kevin Durant. I believe that Phil Jackson will get this team back to the playoffs either this season or next season, but I don't see the Knicks winning a championship anytime soon. I believe his term with the Knicks will be successful.

Will Team USA win the gold in the Olympics this year?

As of right now, Team USA consists of Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Paul George, Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy butler, DeMar DeRozan, DeMarcus Cousins, DeAndre Jordan, and Harrison Barnes. This may not be the "Dream Team" or the "Redeem Team," it's not even the 2012 team, but this team is still good enough to win the gold. Players like Anthony Davis, John Wall, Blake Griffin, Stephen Curry, and LaMarcus Aldridge didn't want to play because of prior injuries, while Chris Paul, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James, Andre Drummond, Damian Lillard, Bradley Beal, and Gordon Hayward decided to withdraw from playing. The USA has the best basketball talent in the world. The USA has been blowing out other countries in the Olympics for a while. With veterans Carmelo Anthony, who has played for Team USA four times (which is a record), and Kevin Durant, Team USA is in good hands. This roster has so much depth that they should blow out every single team they face in the Olympics. Team USA WILL win GOLD in the up and coming Olympics and no one will stop them.

The last pair of questions are coming from my friend Justin Torres. Also there is undeniable proof that Justin Torres is Kanye West's son, Justin said so himself. He is a good friend of mine and he is a fellow writer for Odyssey. Whenever I have a question about music, I go to him. He is known to have a Nick Young and JR Smith shot selection, but hey, they go in (sometimes). Everyone knows that person on snapchat that lip sings or raps to songs? Justin Torres is that person. Also he is a Jets, Yankees, and Knicks fan (threw up again). He is a really cool guy though. His questions involve LeBron, Wade, and Chris Paul forming super team and Phil Jackson being the G.O.A.T of basketball coaches.

Will LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Paul form a super team for the 2017-2018 season?

Currently, LeBron and Dwayne are free agents while Chris Paul is playing for the Clippers. LeBron James is expected to re-sign with the Cavaliers and Dwayne Wade is fielding offers from other teams because talks between him and the Heat broke down. If LeBron wanted Dwayne Wade in Cleveland, all he would have to do is take a pay cut. In this stage of his career, LeBron does not care about money, he cares about winning rings. I believe LeBron is willing to take a pay cut to bring Wade to "The Land." I can see Wade coming to Cleveland, but I don't see Chris Paul coming. LeBron won't leave Cleveland again and I'm not sure if Wade really wants to leave Miami. All three of them would have to go to a team with a lot of cap space, like the Nets, if they wanted to do this. I can see Chris Paul leaving the Clippers, but I don't see Dwayne Wade and LeBron James leaving. Also, who would be the supporting cast to this super team? That is just as important as the trio. I just don't see this happening.

Is Phil Jackson the G.O.A.T of coaches?

Is Phil Jackson, AKA the zen master, the G.O.A.T? It depends on how you look at it. Phil Jackson has had the privilege to coach Michael Jordan AND Kobe Bryant. He was the coach of a Bulls and Lakers dynasty. He is known for his triangle offense which helped his teams win championships. To determine the G.O.A.T of coaches, you will have to look at two things. You would have to look at how many wins the coach has and what is their winning percentage. Lenny Wilkens has the most wins (1332), while Phil Jackson has the best winning percentage at 70.4%. If it was up to me, I would go with win percentage because you can have the most wins with just as many losses. However, I believe that Phil Jackson is the G.O.A.T of coaching. With the players he coached and that winning percentage, you can't deny his G.O.A.T status.

I would like to thank everyone for all the questions and I'm really happy that I was able to do this. I really enjoyed taking the time out of my day to answer questions from my friends. I did this because I love basketball. I love playing, talking, writing about, and even dreaming about basketball. When you are passionate about something, it is more than just fun to you and this is how I feel about basketball. I look forward to updating Facebook about this up and coming NBA off-season, so if you have me on Facebook you know where to look for NBA free agency updates. See you on Facebook!

StableDiffusion

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

121666

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
