Ever since I was little, I was told that if I wanted something, I needed to work to get it. Hard work, says my grandfather, that's the only way anyone gets anywhere in this world.
So maybe that's why I'm puzzled by the concept of the Kardashians.
I can't remember when I first heard of the Kardashians. They seemed to just appear out of thin air. I believe I heard of Kim first, the earliest memory I have of her being when she 'broke the internet' back in 2014. If we're going with that logic, the Kardashians popped into my life when I was a sophomore in high school.
To me, the Kardashians are just another family who happens to be insanely attractive. I assume part of their appeal is their looks. Who doesn't want to have flawless skin, a 24-inch waist, and large lips? That physique was never something I personally wanted to attain, but there are plenty of girls out there who want to look exactly like Kim K. with no possible way of doing that besides having hoards of money for surgery and personal trainers.
It's insane how one family has captivated America. When I delved into their history, I realized Kim was made famous via sex tape, they were constantly dating A-listers, and their lives were essentially dramatized Hollywood fantasies. Then there's the whole Kendall-Kylie lineage, two girls who each seemed to go from '17-year old girl who looks like me' to '17-year old girl who definitely doesn't look 17'.
Call me Krazy, but I don't understand the hype and I never have.
I guess I somewhat understand the appeal. Their lives are crazy so they make you feel good about yours when things get hectic. They're really pretty and rich and elite. They're not the sharpest crayons in the box, either, so they make you feel better about yourself.
But I still don't understand how people can gain fame and notoriety by doing nothing. Once they were on the scene, they got to work creating makeup and clothing lines, but prior to that, there was nothing they did of note besides have a reality show and look pretty. Yet, they're icons and idols. Their puffed-up lips, large butts, and slim contoured faces are things to be desired.
How this happen where people like this are at the top of the societal food chain? How do we keep comparing ourselves to these human caricatures and saying the expectations are realistic? And how do we as a society idolize these people and overlook people who are doing great humanitarian work in other parts of the world?
I guess you could say that I'm konfused.
