It’s the beginning of the school year, so for many that means “go, go, go”. School, work, extra curricular, social life it’s all swirling around your head like a tornado and some how you’re channeling your inner Dorthy and riding it like a pro. We’re pretty awesome, give yourself a pat on the back.
We can do these things without blinking or thinking, going, going and we’re gone, and when I say gone I mean we hit it. The point where we just want to collapse and scream in our pillow. That tornado of our life got a little too strong, and we got kind of cocky. Thinking we can handle every single thing on our calendar without batting an eye. Nope think again, because as much as we want to be super human, it’s not a thing.
So take a seat, you’re in time out.
Now if your schedule looks anything like mine, then your time out limit is short. We spend so much time running through life we forget to recharge our batteries. Let me tell, you recharging batteries is crucial for functioning.
I am the poster child for needing sleep to function, but I also love having a social life. My days are usually filled with school, the organizations I’m involved in, and work. 8 am to 10 pm without stopping and having a poor excuse for a meal. I get home from work and have an internal war with myself, am I going to go out with my friends and wake up tomorrow and do it all over again or am I going to snuggle up in my bed and pass out. 9 times out of 10 my social life wins, but the times my bed wins, oh my goodness those are amazing. Let me tell you, bailing on plans to hang out with your bed is more than acceptable.
My habit of ditching plans for Netflix and my bed is one of my favorite time outs, and it opens the door for more.
Now it’s the morning, and not the acceptable 10 am start to function morning but the 7 am life fully together morning. Instead of starting my tornado of a day I took a time out in a coffee shop. The coffee shop, filled with people; people taking their own time outs, sharing smiles, kindness, and my favorite, coffee. It’s a beautiful thing, being surrounded by those going through the same head spinning day, and seeing them take a time out as well. Sharing laughter and the occasional yawn because it’s still early for some of us.
We live in a non-stop world, the barista who’s running around looking like a chicken with his head cut off is proof of that. So let’s take a time out. Whether it’s ditching plans to sleep, waking up for coffee, or taking ten minutes out of your day to watch those funny videos on Facebook you love.
Take a time out, and just be.
