Living during a time when almost everything seems to be electronic or digital can be tough. Sometimes we feel as though we have to check our phones or answer that "super important" text or see what our friends are up to on Instagram. However, what we don't realize is that there are probably more important people or issues right in front of us. For that reason and more, it's completely reasonable to put your phone down and simply live in the moment.
There's nothing I personally hate more than trying to speak to someone or spend time with a person, but all they are doing is checking their phone or scrolling through their favorite social media. We're all guilty of doing this when we're alone, bored during a class, about to go to bed, etc., but why are we also doing this when we actually have something to do and focus on?
If someone is talking to you, I believe there is no reason to start going on your phone during that conversation unless it has to do with what you're talking about. This may be a pet peeve of mine personally, but it's also simply rude and disrespectful. Most people do not appreciate having to repeat themselves or ask a person if they're listening because of this. Spending time with others is the perfect excuse to take a break from technology and talk face to face.
Although some people, like myself, feel strongly about this subject, I also think there are a lot of positive aspects to living during a time of advanced technology. It gives us the opportunity to take pictures and document our memories. We are also able to share what we're doing with our friends and family we may not see as often. It's easier to keep in touch and for that reason, it's a great thing. However, all of these incredible aspects can also wait.
Next time you're with someone, try to forget you have a phone for that time. I promise everything waiting for you on it isn't going to go anywhere while you're gone.
