Put On Your Boogie Shoes

Much of my spring semester has been spent with the rest of the Purdue University Dance Marathon community building our committees and getting the year off to a fantastic start for the families at Riley Hospital for Children. We've got over 300 amazing committee members in our PUDM family, and it's almost time for us to start recruiting dancers. Dancers are the life-blood of PUDM. They are the pulse, a pulse that beats for one purpose: to end childhood illness.

What is a dancer and what do they do? Being a dancer requires the lowest level of involvement in PUDM, but each and every one of them are absolutely necessary. A dancer has no obligation other than to raise the $250 minimum and attend the marathon in November. It's the dancers that account for the numbers, provide the energy, and fuel and the atmosphere of PUDM when the marathon finally gets here next semester. Without the dancers, we don't have a marathon.

Why become a dancer? If you were on the fence about joining a PUDM committee in recent weeks and decided it wasn't the right time for you, now is your time. Becoming a dancer is a great way for you to get your feet wet in an organization that has touched countless lives and inspired countless people to make a difference. At the marathon, you'll have the opportunity to meet everyone else in the PUDM community throughout the 18 hours. You'll also have the chance to become closer to the cause. You can meet and hang out with the Riley families, hear their stories and be inspired by their courage and positivity. Becoming a dancer was what started me on my journey toward serving on the executive board. Becoming a dancer for PUDM quite literally changed my life and has allowed me to change the lives of children and families in need.

How do I become a dancer? Dancer call outs will be next week on April 14th and 16th. Several members of the PUDM community will be there to give a short presentation and answer any and all questions you may have about what it is we do at PUDM, what it's like to be a dancer, how to fundraise and get you pumped up and excited to make a difference FTK. After you've been thoroughly convinced and inspired, you can go to www.pudm.org to register. If you're as lucky as I am, this small step may be the first of many toward an infinitely fulfilling college experience spent in the service of those who need it most.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
