I always believed that TIME's Person of the Year Award was for nominating an inspiring person who did something to improve our world and is generally good. I am unfortunately wrong about this. I was ignorant to the fact that this position is not always for promoting wellness and improvement. It is my own bad habit to see the good in everything and its potential, before seeing the bad qualities.
TIME's Person of the Year is "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year." The person is recognizable all over the world and is a leader either good or bad. An astonishing example of this is the 1938 winner, Adolf Hitler. What about in Stalin in 1939, Stalin AGAIN in 1942, or Putin in 2007? Explain to me why nothing else that happened in those years were good enough to top these people.
TIME should be using this opportunity to promote the massive improvements people have created or great achievements of leadership.
While it is not uncommon for the president to be on the cover, even the same person multiple times, for this specific issue of the magazine, it isn't always like that on presidential election years. 2004. For example, YOU were the person of the year. Bush was awarded the title in 2000 but not again in 2004 like Obama was in 2008 and 2012.
Radhika Jones said, "[T]he pick also needs to have archival value. You need the sense that it will stand the test of time." So, a timeless person should be the Person of the Year. It should be someone we want to remember when looking back at our history. I believe it should be of someone good, who helped improve the planet in some way. A person who will be recognized forever by their helpful acts, not destruction.
So Donald Trump is TIME's Person of the Year for 2016.
We have a big mouthed liar taking up a year full of innovation and topics bound to be historic. "In the days after the election, everything was negotiable: the wall became a fence, “Crooked Hillary” is “good people,” and maybe climate change is worth thinking about." TIME is promoting and already famous person for winning an election by being loud, rude, ignorant, and inexperienced. Anything is possible, right? That title should be for recognizing someone who not mainstream, someone who people would have no idea about their awesome works that benefitted our planet.
TIME posted this direct quote of why Trump was chosen as the Person of the Year:
"For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year. "
Who would have been a better choice?
I would not say Hillary Clinton, the runner-up.
I would choose similar to 1960's US Scientists, MLK in 1963, the Apollo 8 astronauts in 1968, American Women in 1975 (okay I might be a little biased on that one), THE COMPUTER IN 1982, Peter Ueberroth in 1984, the Endangered Earth in 1988, the Peacemakers of 1993, or David Ho of 1996. There are plenty of other worthy people.
All of these were massive improvements, that are documented forever. I would bet that many people would never know anything about Peter Ueberroth or David Ho specifically. Their contributions were put in the spotlight for the greater good.
For starters, how about anyone on this list?
How about those participating in NoDAPL, Doctors Without Borders, Anti-Sex Trafficking, mathematicians proving research of infectious diseases, or those creating ways to get potable water in third world countries. These people are making great changes and should be recognized and remember forever.
Any of these people would have been a better choice than Donald Trump.
I am just disappointed that a giant magazine that reaches many, many readers, would not try to promote good improvements to society over someone who is already memorable. There is more going on than Donald Trump fumbling over his own words, and his outrageous tweets. There is more going on that everyone deserves to know about.
