Punk music prides itself in its diversity. While the genre seems to have a baseline code to it, it refrains from any idea of defining itself. It also has various sub genres, each having there own styles of dress. With all of that being said there still are definite rules you don't cross that keep you from being a poser. Several times I have had people ask me why I don't wear certain docs with certain things, and it just comes down to the fact that certain things come from certain styles of punk, and certain details are very paramount. Never the less I want to share some things with you as far as style, that may interest you if you want to dress somewhat punk (requested by Abby Jungles).
1. Pants
Some thing that always looks great is a dark pair of levi jeans, or any
pair of dark or light washed jeans. Normally rolled or cuffed at the
bottom, some times featuring writing or patches, almost all branches of
punk were defined by dark jeans and rolled pant legs.
2. Shirts
Always an easy one, is a simple band t- shirt. If you have no money
there is absolutely no shame in a homemade band shirt, in some cases its
much cooler. Also flannels, or plain white shirts are very much
accepted.
3. Shoes
Doc martens, offer a tough yet functional look. Durable and very
comfortable, these shoes are practically indestructible but cost a
decent amount. Where as they might cost the most, they come with a
stigma that demands respect, and when you get your first pair you can't
help but feel more confident (a really cheap place for these is 6PM.com) Other shoes include the American
classics, that we all know and love, which are converse and vans. Both have a very
clean and classic look, and are not too expensive.
4. Jackets and pins
For a punk, your jacket says a-lot about you, it is where you display the
bands you like, the scenes you hold dear, as well as political or
social messages. Patches, safety pins, and buttons usually decorate the
jackets, making it very personal. Punk music has a very "art student" feel
to it, and it is so cool to create and wear that creation. Whether it is a
leather jacket, denim vest or a simple cardigan with buttons, they wore
them all.
