By now most, if not all of us, are aware of what has happened in Puerto Rico in the wake of two deadly hurricanes.
The majority of the country is without power, large groups of people are camping out in airports that have no air conditioning. There are homeless residents along with those who have still have homes but are in danger of losing them due to the damage.
Throughout all of this, Puerto Rico has yet to receive help from the one country that is actually obligated to help them, the United States.
Why? Because even though 47% of Americans aren’t aware of the fact that Puerto Rico IS a US territory, making them Americans, it still is.
America has a responsibility to help them in the wake of this natural disaster and while I don’t expect too much from the everyday Joe, I do expect a lot more from our president. The President has shown a total disregard and ignorance towards the state of things.
His only comments towards Puerto Rico as of late were to criticize them for their slow rehabilitation of the country.
It’s shameful for any leader to show such lack of empathy for people going through an unavoidable natural disaster, but even more so, for it to be towards people he is ultimately responsible for. Instead of visiting or at the very least addressing the issues the entire island of Puerto Rico is facing, the President has decided that NFL players are more important.
On Twitter, he tweeted at least seven times about NFL in comparison to his two tweets about Puerto Rico. In which he tried to blame them for, what is described as the “post-apocalyptic” state of their country.
We know he’s had time to google information, but instead of searching up Puerto Rico and finding out what’s happening; he’s posting videos of Usain Bolt standing for the flag.
President Trump has failed to address Puerto Rico’s state of affairs with the level of respect, intelligence, and honesty that is expected from someone in his position.
An entire island filled with people struggling to survive should be more important than what professional sports players are doing or what Fox and Friends are up to. It seems that the only time the President has time to speak on an issue is when it is unimportant.
