A few months ago I had a great opportunity to meet a young lady who has been struggling with acne problems. For years she has been trying to get a control on it. She has tried product after product trying to get rid of it but nothing seems to work for her. All throughout her life, starting in her early teen years, she was bullied by people for what she looked like. After years and years of this, the comments were becoming more ignorant and rude. For example; “why don’t you wear some make up and cover that thing up that you call a face.” “pizza face” “queen acne” and many harsher comments. Overtime, she decided that she would try make up to cover it up.
Now here is where the story becomes sad. She started to feel confident and not being so concerned with how her face appeared because she had makeup to cover all of the acne and acne scars. She said that she finally felt good enough about herself to take pictures with her friends and be comfortable posting them on social media. After just a few weeks, the comments came back only this time over social media too. However, the comments aren’t what you think they would be. They now were focused on how she was wearing too much makeup. Comments like “this girl just has it caked all over her face.” “slut” (this being because she has makeup on), and “she must be hiding a butt ugly face under all that makeup.” This is what the scary thing about shaming is, a perfectly normal girl cannot have a normal life without being picked on and harassed. It is really sad that this exists.
As soon as she did what others told her to do by covering up her face, they jump down her throat. Just because someone has a skin problem just not make them a reason to be harassed like this. This just shows how critical we are as a nation today. We need to stop publically shamming people. It’s not right and if it were to happen to us we would hate it. we need to take notice to others feelings and not be so critical of others. There is no way to know what someone has been through, so we need to grow up and not shame people publically or at all. We need to put a stop to this once and for all. People are literally killing themselves because of these nasty things people say. It’s bullying in the top form and it cannot continue.
