5 Reasons Why I Absolutely Would Not Have Any Major Other Besides Psychology
Joakim Aglo

I love the field of psychology. There's something so magical about the versatility of psychology. Within one field, there are so many subsets that are vastly different from each other: forensic psychology, clinical psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, social psychology, etc.

In just one field, there are so many different professions: therapist, psychiatrist, mental health counselor, researcher, lawyer, social worker, and so many more. Psychology is a limitless social science that I love to call my major. Here are five reasons why being a psychology major is the best.

1. You get to help people

I love to help people. It makes me feel so good to make a difference in a person's life. Some people put a smile on their face every day and pretend that everything is okay, but we all can't be happy all of the time.

We suffer from loss and pain and stress and sadness. Talking to people who are going through a tough time can really make a difference. With your advice, they can pass it onto others who they can help, too. It's a never-ending cycle that can change people's lives.

2. You can love or hate science

Psychology is a social science, so you can focus on the social part or on the science part (or you can focus on both). Many people have a Bachelor of the Arts (which focuses on liberal arts) or a Bachelor of Science (which focuses on STEM) in psychology.

The science-oriented people usually chose the path of neuropsychology or psychiatry, while the socially oriented people chose the path of being a therapist or social worker. It's up to you!

3. Psychology majors are the nicest people

Yes, I may be a little biased because I am a psych major. But, in reality, all of the people I've ever met in the field of psychology are extraordinary people. Whenever I'm in my psychology classes, everyone shares their stories about a friend, family member, or even themselves who suffer from a mental illness. I find it so brave of them to be in a lecture room of 200 people and still share something so personal.

4. You could go to graduate school, medical school, or law school

Technically, with any major, you can go to graduate school, medical school, or law school. However, I feel that psychology prepares you extensively for all three. You can go to graduate school to become a therapist, go to medical school to become a psychiatrist, or go to law school to become a legal/forensic psychologist. Psychology is applicable to basically everything.

5. Psychology is important in our world today

In the world that we live in, it is important to understand people and how they think. With school shootings, terrorist attacks, and corrupt governments around the world, psychology can help us in our pursuit to make a more peaceful world.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
