This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day Weekend. Beaches will be crowded and our favorite ice cream shops are going to be open even later!! As great as it is to relax and take in the ocean air, it's easy to forget how strong the sun is or if it's hot and humid, the effects of the heat on your body.
I'm aware that it's been said ad nauseam, but it's important to take care of yourself, especially in the heat and/or direct sunlight. However, I know from personal experience that the littlest things have the biggest impact on your body. I tend to get lightheaded when it is hot outside and I get seasonal eczema on top of that. Over the years, I have learned from experience that I must have water with me at all times throughout the day, as well as moisturizer, which is more commonly associated with the wintertime.
If you're planning on being outdoors, drink plenty of water and keep snacks handy. Drink Gatorade as well if you decide to work out or if you have lower blood pressure like me. Be mindful of the temperature and do not overexert yourself. It's okay to slow down and take breaks as needed. Find shade if the sun becomes too much for you.
No matter what you do outside, DO NOT forget to apply sunscreen at least fifteen minutes before you go out. To do so properly, shake your bottle (or can) and liberally apply the product all over your exposed skin. Remember to cover your ears, scalp, toes and the tops of your feet. Reapply every 2 hours, or after you get out of the water.
Other ways to prevent sunburn include wearing clothing made with cotton and a hat to shield your eyes. Use hair products with UV protection as well as lip balm with SPF. You may not know it, but those areas get effected similarly to your skin.
Even if you don't burn or you tan easily, sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Some of my family members have had melanoma and cancerous moles and skin tags they had to get removed. I cannot stress enough the importance of shielding yourself from the sun's UV rays and keeping yourself hydrated this Memorial Day, as well as everyday.
