5 Questions You Have To Ask (And Answer) Before Bringing Your Furry Friend To School With You

When bringing your pet to college there are things you need to keep in mind and consider, such as these five points below to ensure that you are making the best choice in bringing him or her along with you.

Are you allowed to bring your pet along with you to college?

The most obvious of them all I know, but you need to make sure that is OK with either your dorm building or apartment complex that you can bring your pet with you. If you have a roommate they as well need to be alright and comfortable with you bringing an animal. And, for some of you, you need to make sure that having a pet is alright with your family! No one wants to go home for winter break with an animal that their family does not want in their home!

Are you ready for the responsibilities that come along with having a pet?

Having a pet is a lot of work. You have to be prepared to take care of another life. That means you can not forget to feed your pet, take it for a walk if need be, bathe it, and most importantly, overall care for your pet always!

Do you have everything prepared to bring your pet to college with you?

Do you have their food, bowls, leash, collar, name tag, toys, treats and other necessities in which they will need? And if you have a furry friend that is a cat, do you have a litter box and litter?

A big thing to figure out for your pet is a new vet for them in the new town you will be living in. That way if there is any emergency that might arise you will have your animal's medical records already on hand and a new vet picked out!

These are just some of the many things your pet will need in order to thrive and feel at home while away at college with you!

Do you have time for your pet?

You need to make sure before you commit to having a pet in your life at college that you will have the time for them. Being a college student is enough work as it is, between classes and extracurricular activates you might be involved in, and for some also having jobs.

If you are in a sorority or fraternity or any other organization that takes up all of your time then a pet might not be the best thing for you to bring to college. If you are in something that takes up all of your time and you truly want to bring your pet then you must be good with time management to make sure you have time for all of the things in your life, including your pet!

Is your pet a family pet from home or a new pet?

I ask this question because if it is a family pet will he or she adjust well or go into a state of depression from being in a new place? If it is a new puppy or new animal can you handle the house training and other responsibilities that come along with a new pet?

These five points are extremely important to go over and consider in regards to bringing an animal with you to college. I know from personal experience I had to really consider all of these things when I wanted to bring my family pet, Cajun an 8-year-old German Shepard/Blue Heeler dog with me to my new apartment my sophomore year.

Making the decision, in the end, to bring him along was the best decision I could have made and watched him closely, in the beginning, to watch for signs of depression or homesickness was very important. Thankfully, he was only in a funk for a couple of days and is back to his old self and I could not be happier to have him with me and my roommate!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
