19 Promises I Mean To Keep For My 19th Year, And Forever After

With every year of life that passes, I set new goals and hopes for the year that's ahead of me. I make promises to other people, but rarely to myself. It's time I make myself promises to live respecting. Nineteen promises for my next trip around the sun and every one to come.

I promise to...

1. Be more open with myself.

Open myself to feel more and be more in tune with my feelings.

2. Learn from my mistakes.

To grow I need to learn. To learn I will sometimes need to fail. I need to allow myself to learn from those fails to become a better person.

3. Appreciate life more.

4. Have more faith.

Believe that everything has a purpose and everything happens for a reason.

5. Gain confidence.

Believe in myself and the person that I am and can be.

6. Live the life I want to.

Stop letting my life be controlled by others.

7. Form new relationships.

Be more willing to form bonds with others and take every opportunity I can to build more relationships.

8. Let go of what’s holding me back.

9. Smile at least once a day.

10. Dedicate more time to loving myself.

11. Step out of my comfort zone.

12. Stand up for myself.

13. Do more of the things that make me happy.

14. Value others more.

Value their time and effort. Value them as human beings and overall the person that they are.

15. Accept my flaws.

16. Put out positive vibes.

Make the universe a better place by projecting positivity and taking negative things and making them positive. Dedicate my life to making sure I surround others with a positive vibe and attitude.

17. Be part of the solution not the problem.

18. Enjoy the little things.

This is such an easy thing to say but can be difficult to do. I need to focus more on making things more enjoyable in my life no matter how big or small they are.

19. Understand myself more.

Why I make the choices I do? Why I react to things the way I do? Understand the person I am and ground myself more.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
