Seeing Prof Changed My Life A Little Bit

Prof, I owe you at least a beer.

I first heard about Prof about two weeks before I went to see his show in Eugene, OR. His new album “Pookie Baby” dropped and my roommate, Jasmine, started bumping the song I’ll bet he’ll get actually famous for, “No.”

This comedic super hype song became a necessity in our queues when we drove, cleaned our apartment, and excessively during parties. Eventually, we were listening to the whole album. Then just everything Spotify had.

This story jumps to a recent Tuesday, the night of the concert. Jasmine realizes Prof is having a concert that night and we have about 40 minutes until doors open. Now, that sounds urgent but Jasmine and I are no stranger to chasing excitement spur of the moment.

So we actually arrived a lot earlier than we had wanted. Like, it was so empty for 30 minutes, big yikes. We danced alone in the middle of the venue to whatever WOW Halls DJ was putting out, because we're those girls.

Finally, Willie Wonka comes out and gets the show started. This guy had moves and so much face during his sesh it was awesome. Then Cashinova comes out, pure swag. After is Mac Irv, a soulful man that I think if I had the chance to just stare into his eyes I’d have a profound experience.

Mac Irv leaves the stage. Now, I’ve only heard Prof from his albums and to be honest no white bald dude had ever done it for me so I didn’t expect to have my expectations so far surpassed. The concert hall was still shaking from the guys before.

Prof comes out with insane energy. Everyone is going bananas and he’s going bananas back at us. It was like pure symbiotic banana energy. As he did his thing it was like how I’d imagine seeing Freddie Mercury must have been - great music and a phenomenal performance. Charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent - let's crown our next Queen Gampo.

The energy in the room was unreal and maybe even a little too much at times for safety’s sake, but nobody got too hurt.

I could drone and fangirl on and on about the technique of the show, the dynamics, the music, about Prof himself and his stage persona and performance, but the point is that there was something in me that got ignited from all that energy. I felt lighter. I felt happier. I think I finally figured out why two weeks after -

The last couple years I've realized that I have lived and continue to live a very unconventional life. Stability, routine, average - these are words I cannot use to describe how my life works. Whether I want it to or not, my life moves fast with crazy high highs and equally crazy low lows and not a whole lot in between. And I love it.

But those lows are things that stick with a person in a different way. In a way that for me, creates this alternate perspective and I end up receding into myself and get obsessed with my mysterious depressing past - it’s not cute. And I had been in a hole for some months, just trying to figure out what was happening with me and I just became so much less of myself.

But going to see Prof, hearing those words I had survived by in such an exciting and fun space clicked something in my brain that I needed - I needed to chill the fuck out and stop worrying about my life and comparing myself to people.

No one is going to be happy for me, no one is going to deal with my problems besides me. I can do my best in life to get far and follow my passions, but at the end of the day my happiness and love for myself and the people around me, that’s what gets me up. Being able to share experiences with people, being carefree and do wild stupid things, being able to love and be loved - that’s what I survived off of before.

"I believe in nothing, I believe in myself", thank you for reminding me.

Go check out Prof, “Pookie Baby” out now!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
