13 Things That You Probably Don't Clean (But Should)
Emily Mattson

Clean freaks, rejoice.

Here are the overlooked items you use everyday but (probably) don't clean. Unless you are Monica from Friends.

1. The microwave

Your microwave is a prime spot for bacteria to fester and smells to linger.

Whenever I have extra space in my dishwasher, I throw in the microwave plate. Take a disinfecting wipe and scrub out the interior and buttons every other day.

2. The fridge

I enjoy long romantic walks to my fridge. My clean fridge, that is. Taking the time to clean out expired food, wipe down residue, and clean the crumbs out of the drawers will make your food look that much better.

3. The vacuum

Your vaccum cleaner is your best friend when it comes to cleaning your carpet. But how often do you really empty the inside of the vaccum? Or wipe down the outside? If you never have before, there is no time like the present to start.

4. Under the burner covers

This is an easy spot to miss. Your stove top likes to collect crumbs and keeps them out of reach.

Next time you vacuum, take the hose and run it over the top of the burner.

5. The dish drying rack

After collecting the water from several dishes, your dish drying rack can get gross fast. To prevent build up, run it through your dishwasher or scrub it down with a sponge and soap.

6. The shower

Dark, cold, and wet places are the perfect place for bacteria and mold to grow. To prevent this and have a cleaner shower experience, scrub down your shower caddy or soap holder. Soaking it in the sink with some dish soap will work wonders.

7. The bath mat

Another perfect place for bacteria to live! When purchasing a bath mat, make sure it is machine washable. Wash the mat when you wash your towels.

If the washing machine is not an option, consider soaking the mat with a mild laundry detergent and rinsing it in the shower.

8. The toaster

The crumbs from your toast can add up after a while and create an unpleasant burning smell. Take advantage of the pull-out crumb tray or dump your toaster upside down over the garbage.

9. The window/door sill

If you’ve never looked down into the nooks and cranny of your door or windowsill, you might be in for a mess. These spots are often overlooked during dusting sessions. Take a paper towel or microfiber towel to these parts and you will be back in business.

10. The door

The door is the very first thing when you come home and the last thing you see when you leave. Taking a rag to wipe down the door (inside and out) and handle will give you a great first (and last) impression.

11. The hairbrush

Hairbrushes can collect lots of gunk and dead skin. To avoid this fiasco, rinse your brush with water and scrub with shampoo.

12. The steering wheel

Imagine how many surfaces your hands touch before you get in your car—it’s a lot! Wipe down the wheel with a disinfecting wipe and keep hand sanitizer in your cup holder.

13. The TV

We all know that we should clean our remotes, but the buttons on the actual screen are often overlooked. Use a dry microfiber cloth to dust the screen and a disinfecting wipe for the buttons.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
