This past week, news broke of the resignation of longtime ESPN President John Skipper. Skipper, who served as the company’s president since 2012 resigned citing substance abuse, deciding the most important thing he could do for himself currently was to get help for his problem.
This resignation may seem fairly irrelevant to most people, but in this resignation, many questions need to be asked.
Over the past couple of years, ESPN has laid off hundreds of employees, including big names like Andy Katz, Ed Werder and Trent Dilfer. Some of these layoffs have been highly questionable, and with the recent resignation of Skipper, the question must be asked as to whether Skipper was in the right mind to fire these employees.
Seemingly, since skipper has started relieving people of their Jobs, ESPN has been a downhill business. They have lost a large number of viewers and ratings recently due to not only their layoffs but also their handling of situations such as Jemele Hill’s political comments on live television regarding race issues in America and President Trump.
With the resignation of Skipper, it will be intriguing to see where ESPN will go from here. With everything that has happened within the company over the last few years, it would not be a surprise to see them continue in their downhill spiral, but perhaps, new leadership is exactly what the company needed.
Often times, we see this situation on sports teams.
After lackluster years, or even during, teams will dispose of their head coaches/managers. Following this, many teams tend to play inspired, and results, at least for a while, are much better than previous.
While it is possible that ESPN will be able to turn things around in the coming time, these next couple of months will be absolutely crucial for the company’s future success.
