My bet's on 'Lady Bird'

The beginning of every New Year is always my favorite time. Because that's when the best award shows are, where I get to sit anxiously and either scream at my television or cry an applaud for whoever wins. There really is no in between when it comes to me and award shows. I'll be going through these same emotions come March 4th when the coveted Academy Awards air live too.

We all have our favorites and like our favorites, we want to see them prosper and come out on top among the rest of them. So, because I'm human and allowed to give open opinions on things, I thought I would give my predictions on who will win big at this years Oscars.

And if you think I'm being biased towards a certain movie (ahem..'Lady Bird') then you would be exactly right. Don't take my word for it though, see it for yourself.

But seriously though, a lot of the nominees deserve to win and it was difficult to narrow it down to one when there are--like every year--many deserving actors, actresses, movies, and directors who should get an award. So, if you don't like who I've picked out of these categories, I'm sorry but that's just how things go sometimes. Much like when your favorite doesn't end up winning.

Please, continue with an open mind.

1. Best Picture

The nominees are:

1. "The Shape of Water"

2. "Darkest Hour"

3. "Dunkirk"

4."Phantom Thread"

5. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

6. "Get Out"

7. "The Post"

8. "Call Me By Your Name"

9. "Lady Bird"

My prediction: "Lady Bird"

The amount of love I have for this movie is indescribable. It was by far the best film I had seen last year and I saw this in December. The simplicity, honesty and utter realness it brought was unlike anything I've ever seen before.

This movie proved that you don't necessarily need all the glitz, glam, special effects and added extras in order to be great. Sometimes it takes putting and expanding on the simple aspects that bring together a compelling story that tugs at your heartstrings. And with it already getting an award at the Golden Globes, why not sweep this awards show too?

2. Best Actor

The nominees are:

1. Daniel-Day Lewis - "Phantom Thread"

2. Timothee Chalamet - "Call Me By Your Name"

3. Daniel Kaluuya - "Get Out"

4. Denzel Washington - "Roman J. Israel, Esq."

5. Gary Oldman - "Darkest Hour"

My prediction: Timothee Chalamet - "Call Me By Your Name"

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't had the chance to see this much talked about film. But after hearing about all the praise Timothee Chalamet has received in this role, it's enough for me to believe that he has just as much--if not--the greatest potential to win in this category.

Let's be honest, he appears in not one but two great films this past year that are both nominated at the Oscars this year, he's doing pretty well. It's time we stop sleeping on him and give him what he deserves.

3. Best Actress

The nominees are:

1. Sally Hawkins - "The Shape of Water"

2. Meryl Streep - "The Post"

3. Frances McDormand - "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

4. Margot Robbie - "I, Tonya"

5. Saoirse Ronan - "Lady Bird"

My prediction: Saoirse Ronan - "Lady Bird"

I have been a fan of Saoirse Ronan for a very long time, probably since I saw her in "The Lovely Bones." Seeing how much her career has skyrocketed these past few years has been an incredible thing to watch. I have been rooting for her to win an Oscar for a long time and after winning the Golden Globe in this category this year I have the highest confidence that she can go all the way with this one too.

4. Best Supporting Actor

The nominees are:

1. Sam Rockwell - "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

2. Woody Harrelson - "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

3. Christopher Plummer - "All the Money in the World"

4. Willem Dafoe - "The Florida Project"

5. Richard Jenkins - "The Shape of Water"

My prediction: Sam Rockwell - "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

For a film that many--including myself-- didn't think would go far or become as popular as it has, it sure has surpassed my expectations and others as well. And after winning both the Golden Globe and SAG award in this same category, why not finish it off strong and go three for three?

5. Best Supporting Actress

The nominees are:

1. Lesley Manville - "Phantom Thread"

2. Allison Janney - "I, Tonya"

3. Laurie Metcalf - "Lady Bird"

4. Mary J. Blige - "Mudbound"

5. Octavia Spencer - "The Shape of Water"

My prediction: Allison Janney - "I, Tonya"

Let's be real, there is no one else I could see winning in this category besides her. She has swept all the other award shows and with the stunning performance she gives, there's no reason not to see why she deserves yet another award.

6. Best Director

The nominees are:

1. Guillermo del Toro - "The Shape Of Water"

2. Jordan Peele - "Get Out"

3. Greta Gerwig - "Lady Bird"

4. Christopher Nolan - "Dunkirk"

5. Paul Thomas Anderson - "Phantom Thread"

My prediction: Greta Gerwig - "Lady Bird"

Natalie Portman said it best at this year's Golden Globes when presenting in the Best Director category: "And here are the all-male nominees."

Not only is Gerwig the fifth woman to be nominated in this category in the history of the Oscars, but there hasn't been a female winner since Kathyrn Bigelow in "The Hurt Locker" back in 2010. Enough is enough and it's time we start seeing that females are capable of anything and whatever a man can do they can do as well.

There you have it. Don't agree with mine? Want to see if your predictions come true? Make sure to tune in to the Oscars on March 4th!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
