American civilians are privileged to be one of the few countries in the world where having a safe bed to sleep in is the part of the standard of living. Unfortunately, that is not the case for many other countries. The United States of America is benefits from its bill of rights and allows citizens to have a say in their government. It allows individuals to know the limitation the government can impose and the truly enjoy the sense of being “free”. Not all people are granted similar experiences in life - in the United States you can vote new politicians into power which cause social change. For some, the opportunity to change their position in life for themselves and prosperity, comes at the risk of losing their lives.
The Arab Spring started in Tunisia when a man set himself on fire in protest of the government. This lead Tunisia’s leader to step down and flee the country. Other countries realized that if protesting can change the world, why are they not protesting their government. Protesting the government in Syria brought severe backlashes to the civilians as well shocked the global political realm
Take for example the Syrian crisis, which has to be understood in two ways; politically and morally. The dehumanization we see in Syria today is due to a civil mobilized by the 2011 by the Arab Spring Protest. That started with protesters that challenged their government and demanded authoritarian regimes to be dissolved. These people demanded a political change. Basically, President Bashar Al-Assad family has held power in Syria since 1971; monopolizing goods, bombing innocent people, and most recently dropping chemical warfare on rebel held towns.
Syria is considered a failed state— since it has a parasite infesting its walls and dehumanizing people. Said parasite being the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The side of this tragedy that is not often mentioned is the input the actual government of Syria has on the people because of it. When considering the City of Aleppo, we see a beautiful town that has now been tarnished by the Syrian Civil War. Some of the worse attacks due to the divide of support of government; rebels versus unarmed civilians versus Assad. Here Civilians endure bombings, lack of resources and the looming sense of death. The Syrian government retaliated to Arab Spring protestors by shooting them down. The Syrian government wanted to bomb out the enemy at the expense of the civilians captured by rebel forces. Total war has caused a halt in Syria’s productivity. With that also comes the missing generation that is growing up in refugee camps, with destroyed homes. For them it is natural to see people being killed. Dignity and humanity has been stripped in order to maintain control over rebel held Syria, it could be argued that the Syrian government did the best it could. If the best, it could do was bring a country into complete failure are a global hot spot for the degradation of human life.
The need for change started with a protest. The need to change the original position, and to want more from life. However, the people of Syria started the push for humanity that as humans we must continue to carry. There are multiple ways that we could help the people of Syria. By donating to any of these organizations you are helping provide humanitarian efforts to those affected by the Syrian Civil war. If we truly believe that everyone deserves the right to life than it is vital that we support, shelter and empower those who are suppressed by violence and corruption.
