Music has the power to do various things. It can make you tap your foot along to the beat unknowingly; sometimes it comes as subconsciously as breathing. It can make a car steering wheel become a drum set, a guitar, and a bass all at once when that song you just have to belt out comes on the radio. It can make you feel emotions you never knew existed and can change your mood in a split second. Music can spark memories...memories that can make you feel, happy, sad, upset, nostalgic and a plethora of others. There are those songs that you directly link to a specific person and no matter how many times you hear that song, memories come hastening to your head and make you feel something.
For example; when I hear "Live While We're Young" by One Direction, I instantly think of sitting in history class five years ago streaming BBC Radio 1 off my computer with my best friend. It was the world premiere of the song and we were a bit too excited, to say the least. Hearing that song now, I feel nostalgic and extremely lucky I can still call the girl I freaked out with over a One Direction song my best friend.
Sometimes, music can be upsetting in the way that if you associate a band or a musical artist with someone that you may not be as close as you use to be with. Then, whenever you hear those songs, you can instantly be put in a feeling of discontent and nostalgia in a different way than before, a feeling of nostalgia to have that relationship, or whatever it may be, back.
Music also has the ability to make that "heart in your stomach" kind of feeling happen. You know that feeling where it feels like your heart has literally dropped to your stomach and your arms get weak? For me, I get this feeling mostly when I hear the song "Afire Love" by Ed Sheeran. The song is about Ed's grandparents and how strong their love is and how difficult it was when his grandfather passed away. This song came out just a few days after my grandmother passed away...So you can imagine how much I cried the first, (and every time) I heard it.
Music can be an escape. It can be the way you express yourself when you can't find the proper words. It can inspire you, heal you, and make your imagination take flight. It's a language everyone in the world can appreciate and feel. Music has the ability to bring people together when it seems like nothing else can.
Side note; if you doubt this article and the power of music, just think of the songs "All Star" by Smash Mouth, "Accidentally In Love" by Counting Crows, and "I'm A Believer," again, by Smash Mouth, what do you think of? If you're human and haven't been living under a rock since 2001, your answer is most definitely "Shrek." Point proven.
